so how good is that little bottle of Rocksett that comes with an AAC adapter?

i have an AAC 18T on an old 700 take off barrel that i'd like to put on my ruger scout.

i don't care if i destroy the barrel, but i'd prefer not to spend $150 on another muzzlebrake.

is it simply a torch and wrench affair?

and does anyone have a 308 shim kit? i'll trade a handful of cigars for one!

Re: Removing an AAC adapter

Heat won't help you loosen the Rocksett. Rocksett is specifically designed to withstand very high temperatures.

Rocksett is actually water soluble. However, I've never soaked an AAC (or other) Rocksett-installed mount in water. I've always had good luck breaking the mount loose with a proper-sized wrench and cheater bar. Only on a couple have I had problems where the mount was torqued too tightly and the wrench flats rounded slightly during removal.

Re: Removing an AAC adapter

Put the barrel in a vice, man up and break it loose with a wrench. Use a heavy rubber sledge to tap on the wrench, the constant beating will let the brake loosen slowly.

When you break a sealed metal object from another one, especially a bolt, you can heat them up VERY fast by simply torquing them. They will spark and warm up. Using the hammer method makes your life easier.

Re: Removing an AAC adapter

I've removed a couple, and just used a wrench. Didn't need a cheater bar, water, etc. The rockset isn't meant to keep it there permanently, just keep it from unscrewing during firing, and it does that well.

Re: Removing an AAC adapter

I have removed many adaptors using rocksett and I just let them sit for 24 hours in a bucket of water and they come right off. I have only had issues with 2 guns with that method. One the guy used green loctite instead of rocksett and I ended up just wrenching it off and another that had tens of thousands of rounds through it and I let it soak for 48 hours and then put a 3/4 inch wrench on it and it broke free.

Water will make it easy and usually it won't even have to go in a vise you can just hold it use a wrench and it comes off that easy.

Re: Removing an AAC adapter

If its a precision rig..... in a bedded stock. DO NOT just hold it. Take it out of the stock, put it in a vise and take it off the correct way. If you simply "hold on to it" and get the torque going, you run the risk of fudging up your bedding. I have seen it and done it once.

Ive taken off more suppressor mounts and reinstalled them then I can count. Vise + proper wrench + rubber mallet = GTG

it's on a take off barrel... unless you know how to shoot it
