Gunsmithing Removing GI birdcage from colt 6920

Title says it, how do I go about removing the GI flash suppressor and replacing it with a Benny Cooley. Is it as simple as wristing it off and threading the other one on? I am new to this so any info would be appreciated.

They can be very tight. I had to use a friends barrel vice to get enough leverage to get mine off.

Thanks, I have been looking but I can not find what the barrel diameter is at the muzzle or the thread type? Any ideas where I can find the info?

1/2x28 is pretty much the standard for AR15s and the Colt is no exception.
