Alright, I painted my rifle with problems until recently I cannot remove the sunshade. I'm pretty sure the paint has dried and it's stuck. It's not a huge deal, but I don't want to damage my scope by using excess force in removing it. Worst comes to worst, I'll just leave it on. Any ideas for removing it? This is my first rifle, so I'm learning as I go, even if it has to be the hard way haha =) Thanks in advance...

i guess it depends on the quality of the scope on how much force you can put on it without damage but id say one hand and a solid grip shouldnt hurt it...might hurt the base screws though so take it off the rifle first.

Acetone in an eye drop ..squirting some in the seam of the shade should break the seal.

It's on there pretty good, it's a Leupold Mark 4 6.5-20x

If the seam between the scope and shade is packed with paint, I'd take an X-acto knife and (gently) run it around the seam.
If it's really stuck on there, some small strap wrenches like these may allow you to exert enough force to break it free, without messing up the finish.

I had the same problem. I did what was stated above, take a hobby knife and lightly cut around the seam. Then took one of my adjustable band clamp and worked it until I was able to get the shade off all the way. Remeber to stay close to the end aginest the scope, with the band clamp, for support, so that it doesn't collaspe the sun shade. Once I got the shade off, I taped up the sun shade, except for the threads, and cleaned it with acetone on a towel, and sprayed a small amount of dry graphite on the threads. Haven't had a problem since.

If none of the above work perhaps a hair dyer on one of the lower setting will heat up the paint enogh to soften it so it can be removed.

DO NOT USE ACETONE for risk of getting it on the lens seals... acetone has a tendency to destroy them.
I'd start with a razor blade and a strap wrench.

I would definitely go with what dbsinh20 said about the strap wrenches. don't see how that could fail. i wouldn't use a hairdryer on it as it may soften the paint and when you twist it the paint will get ruined.

Use an Exacto/Razor knife to cut the seal of paint between the sunshade & scope body. Q-tip dipped in Acetone to dissolve the remaining paint. Once you can clearly see the joint a few drops of Kroil left for a day or two should do the trick.

Go buy a razor blade, and you will be good to go.. Hope you have a steady hand, and dont slip as you will cut into your new paint job.
