i have made the decision to change the trigger in my rem 700 and i need performance based suggestions. everything the search function spits out is about jewells. i hear that jewells are good BR triggers but often fail in the field. Between timney and rifle basix, which is the better trigger and why?
thanks

Jackson.

I always thought I prefered a single stage trigger until I ran a two stage for a while. CG Jacksons are exceptional.

I am currently in the process of figuring out a way to run one on my AI, and AI triggers are pretty good. Anyone have any ideas?

Can a jewell trigger work on a tactical style rifle that is used a lot? Sure, it probably can for some. However, there are consistently people who are not pleased with them for a field gun. On the bench, they are tough to beat. But, they are much more intricate and need to be cleaned more than other triggers. They are also more difficult to tune. Why do it when you can get an excellent trigger like a Timney, Rifle Basix, or Shilen that just plain work?

I personally am a fan of the X-Mark trigger as well. There have been reports of these needing to be broken in, but GAP seems to not have any problems with them. Once they are tuned and broke in, set it and forget it, it will be much more forgiving of dirt and debris than a jewell will.

Are you trying to figure out how to run a 2 stage trigger on an AI AW? It already has one.
If you want to convert an AI AW trigger to single stage, just turn the sear/trigger adjustment screw to the right. Count your turns so you can return it back if needed. I've reset mine to a single stage which is now set to 1LB. If you are talking about an AI AE, then i can't help since i don't own one. Call AI for data on the AE.

Re: replacing X-mark trigger

I like the X-Mark trigger. I think they feel just as crisp and durable as the older style triggers. I like my jewells but I prefer the factory. But if I had to choose from what you have listed I'd go Rifle Basix.

haha, sorry I guess I was a little confusing.

I like the AI two stage a lot and don't want to run it as a single stage. But I would really, really like to be able to put a CG Jackson trigger on it.

Been a long day doing trigger jobs on a few of my rifles, one being a royal pain in the butt.
Going to an aftermarket trigger for that one.

Re: replacing X-mark trigger

There must be a way to set it up right, I've read that GAP put X-mark trigger in some rifle they built, and I believe if GAP use them, they must have confirmed that it will perform well.

Sorry if this is side tracking the OP, perhaps someone can chip in what ways to adjust the X-mark trigger to make them work?

Cheers~

Re: replacing X-mark trigger

I have heard tell of the X-Mark creeping up in pull weight. I am not sure if this is due to a breaking in period or not? There has to be some reason for this. I have heard cleaning and then making sure the adjustment screws are re-sealed and they seem to work just fine. I have a couple X-Marks that I worked over, and they seem to do great to me. While Remington only advises to adjust using the trigger reset/pull weight screw, the X-Marks that I have used all have adjustment for sear engagement and also for overtravel. The overtravel is useless as an overtravel as it is a dual purpose screw and also acts as the trigger block when the safety is on. If you tighten it too far it won't allow the safety to function. That was the only weakness I have found on the trigger, and in reality not having an overtravel stop doesn't make a difference to me in my shooting. It has been stated that having a very short length of travel before the stop can negatively effect the follow through. That all said, adjusting with a combination of sear engagement and pull weight, I have found the X-Mark to be more than adequate. If they made them out of something other than powder metal, I think one could hone the sear engagement surfaces and end up with a really swell trigger (that's right I said swell). Overall, the two that I have now are both very crisp and I have not noticed anything changing in the pull weight category. I think if they are cleaned up initially they will maintain their settings nicely. I can't for the life of me figure what could make the weight increase as being reported, other than dirt. As the surfaces wear together, they should friction polish and become lighter and smoother if anything, but this is not an uncommon report.

Anyway, I think the X-Mark has as much potential as any other trigger if not locked into the box of only adjusting the pull weight spring. YMMV

Re: replacing X-mark trigger

Dave,
Thanks for the review of the newest triggers. I will still keep a few old school triggers in my safe in case I have to get a new stick and can't get the triggers how I like them. Only issue I have is that I have a few with the safety block still on them. Hate to have to put on fire to unload a round. No real big deal, but an issue still.
