Re: Rifle Case

It isn't hard to cut the foam yourself as long as you make a good outline of the patterns you need cut and you take your time. The tools to make the cuts are varied and can be as simple as a box cutter/utility knife with a thin, long blade, to an electric knife, to a hot wire cutter.

I own cases like that made by Pelican, Storm, Starlight and others. My personal preference are the Storm cases, but all have their advantages and disadvantages.

Re: Rifle Case

There are companies that will custom cut foam to your specs. You send them sketches, dimensions, pictures and they send you foam. It's not cheap, but it looks great.

Google some stuff like custom Pelican case foam and I'm sure they'll pop up.

Re: Rifle Case

wreck - cutting the foam is not too hard with a little care and patience.

First, lay out everything you want to put in the case. You'll be surprised how much you can get in even quite compact cases with a bit of thought and planning. It is worth taking the time to do this carefully (measure three times, cut once!)

leave at least 1" between the outside of the case and the items inside and similar between the weighty objects and anything nearby (for impact and foam compression)

I always do this on the side of the foam that will be on the bottom once cut.....it just makes for a neater job (at least that is my experience).

Once you're happy with the layout draw round the outside of everything in chalk (or similar - I use my daughter's drawing pastels!).

Then, with a sharp box-cutter that is long enough to go all the way through the foam and a straight edge, carefully cut out the shapes from the inside edge of the lines (or you'll have a "wizard's sleeve" experience when it comes time to put your pride and joy in what should be a snug fitting little box

).

Push the blade all the way through the foam and use clean cutting strokes....if you saw away at it, you'll end up with something that looks like rodents made your case liner!

Once finished I give the whole thing a run over with a vacuum as the chalk dust can get everywhere!

That's all there is to it! Simple and easy with a bit of care.

....and one last thing.....I always try to leave room for an extra slot to fir things like the sling, emergency tool kit etc. All those little odds and sods you always forget and then really wish you'd remembered when you have no more room

Good Luck with it!

Re: Rifle Case

Depending what rifle you have midwayusa has precut pelican cases, but they are expensive. Its pretty damn easy to make the hot wire cutter and do it yourself so you might wanna check into that.
