Re: Rifle Case
wreck - cutting the foam is not too hard with a little care and patience.
First, lay out everything you want to put in the case. You'll be surprised how much you can get in even quite compact cases with a bit of thought and planning. It is worth taking the time to do this carefully (measure three times, cut once!)
leave at least 1" between the outside of the case and the items inside and similar between the weighty objects and anything nearby (for impact and foam compression)
I always do this on the side of the foam that will be on the bottom once cut.....it just makes for a neater job (at least that is my experience).
Once you're happy with the layout draw round the outside of everything in chalk (or similar - I use my daughter's drawing pastels!).
Then, with a sharp box-cutter that is long enough to go all the way through the foam and a straight edge, carefully cut out the shapes from the inside edge of the lines (or you'll have a "wizard's sleeve" experience when it comes time to put your pride and joy in what should be a snug fitting little box
).
Push the blade all the way through the foam and use clean cutting strokes....if you saw away at it, you'll end up with something that looks like rodents made your case liner!
Once finished I give the whole thing a run over with a vacuum as the chalk dust can get everywhere!
That's all there is to it! Simple and easy with a bit of care.
....and one last thing.....I always try to leave room for an extra slot to fir things like the sling, emergency tool kit etc. All those little odds and sods you always forget and then really wish you'd remembered when you have no more room
Good Luck with it!
