I finally got my 223 varmint rig ready to go. It is one of the Ruger Hawkeye Tactical rifles they came out with. The trigger pull is excellent. I installed a Bushnell Elite 6500 2-16x42 w/ mildots. I loaded up some 55 gr. Nosler Ballistic Tips using 24 grs. of Varget and the CCI #41 small rifle primer. I got to line it up at 100 yds. yesterday after using a laser bore sighter at 25 yds. As can be seen on the target I posted it was shooting high & right. I adjusted the scope and fired 3 more shots. I adjusted the scope again and feeling uncomfortable with the way the rifle rested on the bags I adjusted them also. It definitely helped as can be seen in the 3rd set of 3 shots. I loaded 5 rd. in the mag and fired for group. The results can be seen on the target and I was definitely happy. Center to center width wise the group measured .375 and height wise it was .250. Not to shabby for an out of the box factory Ruger & Bushnell scope I think. It's definitely a keeper.

Re: Ruger Rifle Ready To Go For Varmints

Thanks for the info... I just bought an LTR and the twist is the same. It's already sub-MOA with crappy factory ammo so I'll probably try your load info and make it even better! Thanks again!

Re: Rifle Ready To Go For Varmints

dang I never seen a ruger like this. how much would one of these cost? and how would is stack up against a rem M700 sps tactical? I was thinking that sps tactical would be my next rifle but I kinda like this.

It would be according to what your dealer priced it at. MSRP is $1,172, but the ones I have seen generally start around $845 or so. Everything about them can be read on the Ruger site. Here's the link to them.

They seem to be pretty identical comparing it to the SPS Tactical I had. The Ruger does have a 2 stage adjustable trigger. It could have been the rifle but this Ruger definitely shoots better than the Rem. 700 SPS Tactical I had.

you say shoots better. accuracy wise or just feel and function wise? I have seen the SPS tacticals put out .5 moa and better. and would you say tat the ruger is worth the extra 300 or so bucks over the SPS?

My 1-9 twist savage barrel loves the 69 SMKs over IMR4064. Varget performed pretty well to, just not quite as well as 4064. I've tried a plethora of loads for the 75g berger vld's and I cant get them to shoot much under an inch, while the 69's are shooting half that. They stabilize, no key holing or anything, just cant get them to shoot. Guess Im gonna try some 75g A-maxes next or something in the 70-73g range. I'm thinking 75's are just to close to the ragged edge of stabalizing out of my barrel. I hear a lot of guys shooting 75s in 1-9 twist very well though. It shoots 40g v-maxes and noslers ok but not great, around .75 with the best load. 50g v-maxes shoot as well as the 69's, consitently in the .4's and .5s. BTW I use the same exact load for my 55g Nosler load with the exception of using CCI 400 primers.

Between the Ruger I have and the 700 SPS Tactical I had the Ruger is better both accuracy wise and function & feel. And to me it is worth the extra money. But that is my opinion and mine alone. Someone else might get a Rem that shoots sub-moa like my Ruger and get a Ruger that barely shoots moa or actually worse. I also have a Rem. 700 XCR Tactical LR in 223 and it doesn't, or so far hasn't, shot any better than the Ruger. I am going to have to sit down and work up a load for it to see if it will do as good or better. Although I don't see how it could get much better. But that is my opinion and everyone has one.

Thanks for the input. I think I'm going to get the SPS. I have always wanted a rem 700 (just a personal thing) and as many have said hard to beat for the price. that ruger is sweet looking just a bit out of my price range right now and I'm not really a ruger fan. thanks again and happy shooting.
