rifle vise recomendations

I bought this one from Brownells

https://www.brownells.com/gunsmith-t...--prod361.aspx

Made in USA. Nice that Brownells has just about every type of jaw material you may need in a one stop shop.

Mounted it on an aluminum plate that will secure to T tracks on my workbench. When I want to use it I put it on my bench. when I don't want to use it it goes in a box out of the way.

Love to say I do a lot of gunwork with it but so far its most useful employment has been building Pinewood Derby cars.

Hmmm just read the reviews on that Brownells vice and they don't look very good.

I bought my vice probably about 4 years ago, perhaps they have a different vendor now. Hope they have corrected base don the negative reviews.

Here's the USA company that assembles the vise. I wouldn't say manufacture, as parts are sourced "globally". A copy of the original which can still be found on eBay and Craigslist. A lot less expensive than the Brownells version.

Get a real vise and some soft jaws. Stick the barrel in the vise and do your bidness.

+1

For me, at home, a Chinese vise from Menards does the job. I bought it to rebarrel ARs, and just the other day I needed to hold a bolt action to mount a scope. Threw a thick leather pad in the jaws and clamped on the rifle only as hard as necessary. Made leveling the rifle and then mounting and leveling the scope to it child's play.

fwiw,
Buy a Wilton Machinist Vise, aka Bullet Vise, and fit a set of 3/4" baltic birch jaw to it. As a matter of fact fit SEVERAL sets of jaws. Take one set and epoxy/glue raw leather, available from Brownells, to each side to avoid scratching anything you clamp in them. I have Wilton Bullet Vises from 1946(the year the started making them) up until 10 years ago and I can tell zero difference in quality. My favorite size is the 3.5" in spades. I have them from 2"(comical) to a 6" that belonged to my father. The 3.5"s are still just about perfect...imho.

Regards, Matt.

I just got a yost 465 off of amazon for about $75. It's cast with a steel channel. looks bomber for any gunsmith work I will be using it for. got some magnetic rubber jaw inserts and think it will work great. Haven't used it a lot yet, but at work we have an expensive wilton and a harbor freight vise, both 5", and they do everything gun related I've come across.
