I need a little advise. I have a savage 10fp in 308. Now this rifle has an internal magazine, I did not consider this when I bought the rifle. Looking to upgrade to an external mag. But have a question about rifling choices. Is the 5r rifling much more accurate than the standard rifling. My present savage will shoot much better than I am capable of shooting right now, I need more practice.

Ok I've done some research and answered my own question. Now all I have to do is decied if I want a new gun or just up grade mine with a different stock that will take an external magazine.

Re: rifling question .308

Factory Savage barrels,(Havent bought one in about 4 years) always shot well.

The problem I had is the bore was so rough it copper fouled really bad. This affected the accuracy.

Sharp Shooter Supply is the only compay I know of making detachable mags/bottom metal. And, I would not recomend them, they have very questionable customer service.

Re: rifling question .308

My ~2002 10FP copper fouled a lot (was still accurate though) for the first 500-1000 rounds. It did finally quit though. Now I've got about 5k through it and still shoots great. It's still getting better, I think. That, or I have! I shot a ~3/8 MOA dot drill @ 200 yards with it yesterday.

turbo54; Thanks for the info. Ive had plenty of sub moa groups at 100yds, and a few groups that if you take out the one flier sub .5 and .4 groups. I know the rifle will shoot better than I can at present, still need more practice.

Re: rifling question .308

Just thought I'd give everyone a little more info on this gun. I'm using 175smk's over 44.5 grains of Varget. OAL is 2.8, muzzle velocity thanks to a kind gentleman at the manatee gun range is 2730 avg. this is on 3 shots so more testing is needed. Highest was 2755 and lowest was 2713. 24" barrel

Nice velocity! I run mine on the ragged edge of pressure, which is 45.5 Varget/175smk @ 2800ish. Not exactly sure. My validated trajectory back-calculates to 2825, but my CED M2 chrony reads them at 2650ish. This load has been qualified by letting them soak in the sun on a bright 100° day for an hour before firing. I occasionally get a very light ejector mark. 45.75 yields a mark on pretty much every one.

I bring this up to solidify the point you really don't need a barrel upgrade. Savage barrels can shoot great, AND last - even with max loads.

Re: rifling question .308

Turbo54; I settled on this load after I went to 45 grains of varget and blew out a primer, using FGMM brass. I also tried an OAL of 2.83 and the bullet got stuck in the lands and came out of the casing when I tried to eject it. Just lucky it only took a light tap to remove bullet, so I guess I'm right at max for OAL.
