so i had a rim get stuck in my bolt. overpressure or damaged case problem / or both. the rest of the brass broke off. any good tricks for getting that out of there? should i send to a smithy? it's had probally 800 rounds through the gun, maybe time for a good bolt cleaning anyway. and to make sure noting else happened to it? whats procedure / cost on such a problem.

EDIT --
i decided that im gonna send off the bolt to a smith, to have him extract the brass thats still there, and to check it over and clean it.

Are there any recommend smiths on the hide that do this? i found the Gre'tan guys site, and was looking under his service section and see that he does "bolt face repair" which is what this would need?

ive heard to many bad things about the sako extractors being installed on remmy bolts, i think im to shy for that one.

You could start a screw in the primer hole. Do not get too crazy and drive it through the primer. Then a simple tug on it. You could also tap it for a machine screw and press itself out. If that did not cut it.....time for a trip in the chuck.

I see this happen all the time. Usually much worse than what happened to yours.

Here is an example:

Sometimes it can be fixed. I would lean towards just getting a new PTG bolt but sometimes depending on the damage a sako style extractor can still be installed:

The only cure as you see is to ditch the Remington crappy extractor design and install a Sako Style. I would not mess with the stuck round and just bring it to a smith or ship it to one and have them remove the stuck case and install a sako extractor. Typically it would be around a $100 or so to get the install done.(that is if the damage is not bad)

I never cease to get a kick out of reading/hearing comments like this! Gives me a pretty good idea of the experience of a gunowner! While the Remington extractor design is not 'perfect' it is damn side better than what most inexperienced people are lead to believe. I am willing to bet a Remington type extractor has "extracted" several times more rounds than the "Sako" type.

I have only replaced 1 (ONE) Remington extractor and that was on a used rifle I purchased. Own or have owned at least 80 different Remington 700/722/721/XP/600's/788 etc over the years and ONLY ONE of those cheezy, no good, cheapassed designed SOB's have failed me! I am somwhere over 60K rifle rounds loaded mostly for myself and a few other friends/relatives and 70% or more have been fired in a Remington.

Guess I been lucky!!!!

Re: rim stuck in remmy 700 bolt

I see this nearly every time I go to the range and a few times at matches. You are right it is usually due to an inexperienced shooter or more specifically an inexperienced reloader. However the bolt head in the picture was from shooting Hornady super performance ammunition. I would rather spend the money and never have extracting issue than to risk that thin little strip of metal breaking or having a case seized on. I spoke to Remington engineers on this issue years ago and they said it was more of a cost issue. However Remington quickly ran into issues when they started working with the .338 Lapua cartridge. They ended up replacing all the ring type extractors and going to the sako style (M16 type extractor) with the .338 Lapua offerings. I also have seen some smiths modify the bolt heads with what looked like a stronger metal ring and weld\brazed in place.

Also note: This could be an issue with poor materials or bad quality control with the extractor components as I have seen this more and more in the last few years. As my Dad also shared a comment to me like yours about how he never broke an extractor in his life....All I know the last 3 Remingtons that i have bought (in the last 2 years) have been garbage in terms of quality and parts breaking.

Here is a pict I found in the Remington .338 Lapua thread showing the factory bolthead with the M16 type extractor

Re: rim stuck in remmy 700 bolt

I would pull the case head from the bolt and assess the situation before I redesigned my rifle....if it was hot enough to swell into the extractor groove, it could not have been too far from making bad things happen to the sako style extractor.

Re: rim stuck in remmy 700 bolt

Anyone should be able to do it. All it needs is to be machined thin enough to flex it out, but not so much as to have the ejector pop out and crash against the tool. Once out measure the head and bolt body to see if there is any swelling, if so punt, if not....time for a close look to see if there is any signs of stress cracks.....which should be ok if it passed the Mic test.

This is an easy procedure, but does require the lather jig or a skilled hand on the mill.

Re: rim stuck in remmy 700 bolt

Agree with SDWhirlwind, put a sako extractor in my 40x,because everybody said it was better, what a JOKE,they are not any better than the factory ones, and are a total waist of money, mine was installed by Kampfeld Kustoms, great job just a waist of money thats all.

Re: rim stuck in remmy 700 bolt

Understand that the Remington extractor design is part of the safety of the system. It wasn't arbitrarily thrown in.

Like anything you must know it's strengths and limitations. The Remington extractor is not a perfect design. However there is a reason that none of the 700's in my safe have "sako" extractors.

The main reason that Remington extractors get a bad rap is that end users don't realize that you cannot remove and reinstall them. When they are removed, they must be replaced with a new piece. I have had a grand total of one Remington 700 that had a bad extractor from the factory. It went several hundred rounds with only an intermittent issue. Replacing the extractor took a few minutes and had the rifle running perfect.

I have spend a long time with Remingtons that were lovingly used and abused far beyond what most civilian rifles see. The factory extractors worked just fine.

If there was issue with them, then it would not take the PWS at Quantico any time at all to refit the M40's with Sako extractors. There may be a reason why they have not done so.

Send it to a smith. Cost will be dependent upon the smith.
