Roanoke Egg Shoot

Re: Roanoke Egg Shoot

Jon,
It was good meeting you at the match yesterday, I always enjoy shooting with and meeting other hide members. So how did things for you, did you stay to shoot a few eggs?

Re: Roanoke Egg Shoot

We left after the shootoff. Daughter was playing Ball in Lynchburg so we sprinted east.
Great seeing you guys and hope to be able to throw some buisness your way. I really liked the look of that 308 you had.
It was good to see you guys had a member of the next generation with you as well. The most important concept to shooting is passsing it down.

Re: Roanoke Egg Shoot

I was there shooting my remington 700 xcr tactical long range in 308. I shot it in factory class and hunter/tactical class. I cleared all of the targets in factory class, and cleared all but one in hunter/tactical class. The one I left in h/t class got bumped by another target and was sitting sideways. I had six shots left just for that last sideways one but never could hit it. I lost in the shootout in factory class so ended up tied for fourth in it. There were 5 people that cleared all of the targets in h/t class and myself and another guy that had tied with nine targets. It was a great shoot and look forward to attending next year.

Re: Roanoke Egg Shoot

My son Brad (Supperssed APA 308) ran 9 in H/T and knocked the 10th over then hit it on the edge and spun it around but it stayed on the rail keeping him out of the 3 gun shootout. I made the open shootout but went out in the shoot for 3rd with a AICS stocked GAP 7WSM.
Lot of nice rigs and good shooters.

Re: Roanoke Egg Shoot

Yall shot in the seventh relay if I remember correctly. I was watching both of yall with the spotting scope. I was hoping he could have gotten it off of the rail, he was all around it, kind of the same thing that happened to me. I believe I saw you make a hit and 2 or 3 other targets went out with it, I had that happen a time or two. Both of yall shot very well. My father in law won second in the open shooting a savage lrpv in 260 rem. The guy that won the open class (chris) came up with us, he was shooting a savage lrpv in 6mmbr. It was a great shoot and I can't wait for the next one.

Re: Roanoke Egg Shoot

There was some nice stuff there but other than the "Benchrest/Custom" I didn't think it was that much of a benchrest match. Last year the hunter/tactical was called "modified" & 3" flat forearms were legal. That made it a little unfair for a rounded stock off bags (had to shoot against mechanical rests). I think it was better classed this year.

Jon, I remember you (at least your gun) very well. I was on the bench to the left of you in the 7th relay shooting my factory gun. That thing is LOUD! Looks like it's a shooter too.

The steel was a neat challange. If you hit the edge it would spin it in the opposite direction from edge hit. That helped sometimes knocking off 2-3 (seen a few knock off 4-5 that way). However, sometimes it would leave one sideways or fell down on a 45. I had one turn sideways in factory also but had another plate staning to the right. I was able to hit the flat plate on the edge & it spun into the sideways plate. It didn't knock it off but turned the backside to me, enough for a hit on the next shot. I'm glad too, I ended up winning the factory. I also cleaned in the custom class but didn't do squat in the shootoff.

He is a copy from another site if anyone was interested in results.

Re: Roanoke Egg Shoot

That was just a way of saying I sucked. I had the desert camo totally tactical rifle that shot in the 5th relay. The rifle was up to the challenge, but the shooter wasn't. I make it a point to make it down for the egg shoot every year, I wish Mark would do 2 a year instead of just 1. It gets bigger each year. I'm going to try to be a little more prepaired next year.

Re: Roanoke Egg Shoot

Yep, this was only the 2nd time I had been. I learned alot from the first year. I won the egg last year but only cleared 7/12 skeet that year (shooter/spotting error in the event, the gun was shooting). I shot three guns this year, cleaning with two. I was the one that caused the big delay... The grean/white gun that got to shoot by myself becasuse a couple of my plates decided to hide behind the sighter steel. Nothing like 50+ people sitting around waiting on you...

It did seem much bigger this year. Not sure by how much. If I remember there were 6 relays last year?? I too wish they would run another this year. It's about 2.5hrs from the house & worth the drive. Lot of fun.

Re: Roanoke Egg Shoot

If you noticed, prior to my incident, they had the sighter steel actually attached to the rail between the two shooters (1&2 were bunched, 3&4 on a single rail, 5&6, 7&8....). During my relay, I got 3 plates bunched up, all touching after an adjacent hit. As anyone would do, I aimed for the middle of the three. Chit went everywhere & it appeared to have clean the last four plates off, other than one laid down on it's face (I was able to get it off next shot). I thought that was the last & I had cleaned all, but in actuality, instead of knocking off 4, it had just slide the 2 plates (far right) over behind the sighter steel. I don't recollect how far they were from the sighter steel to start but if I had to guess, it slid them right not more than ~1.5 feet. Prolly closer to 8"-10 inches. No one ever touched either of the pieces that slid. I shot them the way they stopped. The target runners only laid down the sighter steel so I could see the plates. They were bunched up also with the back one nearly to fall off anyway. I was lucky enough to hit the front one on the first shot (was turned at bad angle) & it took care of the back one... When I quit shooting in the regular relay, I had 4 bullets left that’s what the gave me to finish. If the sighter steel hadn’t been there, would have been no problem. If you noticed they put sighter plates behind the rail after that happened.

Re: Roanoke Egg Shoot

Right I know exactly how it happened for you. My question is since you got to go up to the targets, how far was it from where they originally had the sighter steel to where they placed it on the bank behind the tatgets to keep it from happening again?

Re: Roanoke Egg Shoot

Hey no problem. I'm surprized it didn't happen to me, if something can go wrong it usually does for me. I enjoyed shooting with everyone and seeing all the nice rigs. You would think as popular as this is they would try to do a couple of these per year, but I can see where doing a match this size could be time consuming.
