Ruger 77/22 questions????

I have a couple of questions.
1. Is the Ruger 10/22 and 77/22 barrels interchangable in .22LR?

2. Is the .22 LR 77/22 bolt face the same as the .17? Can those barrels be interchanged?

I was just wondering. I have not had the opportunity to place a 77/22 barrel next to a 10/22 barrel.

77/22s since Jan 2010 have threaded in barrels.
For pre 2010 models, a 77/22 barrel will go on a 10/22 with the proper spacer and v-block shim.

Because of the longer shank, a 10/22 barrel requires lathe work and a left extractor groove to work on a 77/22.

.22LR and 17HM2 share the same case head dimensions; .22WMR and .17 HMR are larger, but identical to each other.

The only thing needed to convert a 77/22 from .22LR to .17HM2 is a barrel. Ditto for the .22WMR to .17HMR conversion.

My 77/22 was made around 1990. With the additional work it doesn't seem to be worth trying to fit a 10/22 barrel.

Does anyone have any experience with the Green Moutain Barrels for .22 LR?

I put a 20" GM barrel on my walnut stocked 77/22. Here is the description from GM's website and a link to the barrel:

"20" Stainless Steel fluted sporter barrel for the 77/22 LR. .920 diameter for about an 1½" and then tapers down to .600 @ the muzzle. These barrels will fit the stadard factory stock but do keep in mind that depending on your stock you still may need to sand out the channel."

What is important to note is their comment about needing to sand out the barrel. It was certainly a fatter barrel than the stock sporter Ruger barrel and sanding was required. As long as you are OK with this, it's a fine barrel.

If you are considering a drop in replacement 77/22 barrel I suggest that you do not put if off too long. As a poster above mentioned, Ruger now screws their barrels to the receiver so over time the market for drop in barrels will shrink leading to less availability of the 77/22 drop in barrel.

for those of you who havent bought a 77/22 yet..

i sent ruger a request to make a trainer 77/22. threaded 1/2x28, black hogue stock, picatinny rail, mtu-fluted barrel, black phosphate action.

hopefully theyll be open to the idea, especially since they made the tacticool 10/22, and the failure gunsite scout m77

20rd magazine exactly the same but longer?
You realize it's rotary?
10rd is normally considered very high cap for a .22 bolt action, it's flush, and you want bigger?

MTU is a barrel contour. It is 1.25" straight taper down to .980 if I remember correctly. It is very heavy! I'd like to have one of the 77/22's or a 77/17. They are great shooters and close to a full size centerfire rifle.

Short. I'm having my CZ cut to 16.25" & threaded for the day I get out of this dreadful state. That's plenty for .22.

I dont remember the thread on here, but it seemed that 14" was the sweet spot for barrel lengths.

I think some machinist did a test on velocity while cutting down a barrel. 22-15" showed a decrease, 14ish showed the peak, and under 14 the velocity decreased again.

I wish i could find that thread. I forgot to tag it. *Doh!*

EDIT: found it was a guns&ammo test. I dont really trust the validity, since i know someone here did it, and the results were different.

Anyway, 16.25 is the shortest you can go before getting into SBR territory.

It would be a <span style="font-weight: bold">NO</span> to question #1, they lock up differently.
as for #2 I am not definite, but I am pretty sure that is a yes if you have a .17-M2 barrel and want to put it on the L/R receiver. I would contact Ruger to verify though.

A 77/22 barrel can be installed on a 10/22 receiver with a couple of shims in the tenon and v-block cut.
It takes lathe work and a LH extractor cut to put a 10/22 barrel on a pre 2009 77/22 receiver. Since 2009, 77/22s have threaded barrel mounting.

A .17HM2 conversion to a .22LR requires only a barrel swap.
A .17HMR conversion to .22WMR requires only a barrel swap.

The receivers for all 4 calibers all use the same receivers, I believe, different bottom metal requires for short vs long,and short vs long mags.

I believe magnum bolts can accommodate all 4 calibers, while a little work bolt require LR and HM2 bolts to accommodate the magnum cartridges.
