I'm sure it's been documented before but I felt like sharing. My buddy wanted to build a budget gun to figure out if he likes long range before dropping a lot of coin. His solution was a Ruger American. He stiffened the stock w JB weld and added more weight w sand in the buttstock. Besides that he added a base and a pretty decent scope. It hits at 1200 w great regularity. At a mile it wasn't as easy but he did manage to get one hit.

I think it's cool a guy can get into this hobby without breaking the bank. I'll agree one hit doesn't make this a competive rifle for 1 mile shooting but it did get the hit and now I think he is hooked and ready to upgrade.

Been contemplating one of these rifles... With Magpul going to release their Hunter stock for them it seems like a decent step from a .223 to a bigger gun. Then if I do continue to enjoy it I can easily retire it to a hunting rifle.

That's pretty much the thought process my buddy had. So far it's not the most impressive Rifle in the world and no one expected it to be. That said it has been impressive given the investment.

There are several other mods you can make......an upgraded bolt handle, spindle sanding the barrel channel to remove contact points (especially on the left side of the channel) use silicone mold making material for the stock fill vice sand.

I have two, one the Ranch version in 556 the other the predator in 308, both configured the same with Gemtech's QD flash suppressor for the Gemtech One. Both make excellent hunting guns but have had less than stellar accuracy in both.1.5 MOA at best. But still looking for that right round.

It was all the Athlon scope, just kidding. I think the Ruger American is the best cheap rifle around. The ones that friends have worked very well and were decently accurate.

Yeah the original barrel channel wasn't the best. It was addressed by hogging out the channel very aggressively then backfilling w JB weld and contouring. It was finished off w an oversized wooden dowel and some sand paper. It really cleaned up things as well as added some much needed weight.

I was pretty displeased too until I found the right load, now it will put 220gr RN sierras touching at 100 yards with 12 gr cfe blk with federal brass, right at its max load but I developed it in the middle of the texas summer so I shouldnt have to worry about any heat spikes. Shift it .1gr either way though and it opens back up like the groups youre experiencing. Not the most forgiving barrel but that right load does bring it into the light. I cant complain for 400 bucks including tax. ;)

I just sanded up the left side of mine until it had adequate clearance so that it no longer contacted when I put it on a bipod and leaned hard into it. Didnt bother back filling it or anything like that. Sure that means it took all of that top flat edge off but that doesnt matter to the piggies in the dark where it gets used. Theres only 1/8" or so on the top lip to start with. I do find it funny that literally every single one twists on that left edge.

I wish more of my friends would try and get into the shooting game, Id like to toy with one of these with them for the long range game on the cheap.

I skipped the tubes. The material adds 1lb in weight and the batch fills EXACTLY the stock., provides a better balance for a suppressor and is an easy overnight project. Yeah, yeah, yeah, I know, vertical split rings. But they work for me if I follow the proper torque specs and instructions..

I've got a RAP 6.5cm and it's a hammer Hornady and PRIME match ammo. Only thing I did was sand down the barrel channel to free float the barrel.

Didn't watch video and maybe missed it but what caliber is this?

That's pretty cool! Been thinking about getting one of these to dick around with in 6.5 Creed. The 300 BLK and 6 Creed would make a good youth hunting rifle. Been waiting for somebody (besides Boyd) to come out with an aftermarket stock or chassis.

Ruger American really needs a fiberglass after market stock. Magpul is releasing one in the hunter line but I'm not crazy bout the plastic . I'll just keep waiting

I agree with this, and also it'd be nice if Bell and Carlson made a couple of their stocks for the Ruger American.

Brownells has their BRN-1 chassis by MDT for the Ruger American short action.
