Nah, I think the Ruskis have their head out of their ass. We're the ones who love to buy sub-standard Chinese products.

Re: Russians getting rid of the AK????

That's outstanding! A Russian with vision and appreciation for progress. The man is obviously on point. The Russian's have been using the old technology of the AK with no real advancement in the design to give better long range accuracy. The SVD has never been a star of LR shooting being a 1.5 - 2 MOA rifle at best on a good day so it is nice to see a man who can stand up to the party line adn say they need new shit that works better.
Now if they can get their ducks in a row, work on making their own new technology instead of reverse engineering our's, they may still yet become that old COld War force to be reckoned with. Until then, they are no more a threat than any other cold war relic

Re: Russians getting rid of the AK????

Be nice if they could be something of a thwart to the Chinese who are encroaching on Russia's eastern third and marrying Russian women in increasing numbers due to the rampant drunkenness and abusiveness of Russian men.

China is taking the territory it needs from Russia right now. Perhaps ole Pooty Poote might start paying attention to that.

Not that I really give a crap about Russia keeping lands it took over the last 500 years!

I wonder how impressed the Chinese are with Vlad's macho displays. Doubt their terribly impressed with golf or basketball hackery either...

Re: Russians getting rid of the AK????

It is actually a pretty interesting article and prompts the following questions:

1) What is driving this story? Arms or the wages of those that are responsible for manufacturing arms within Russia?

2) Is there a time pressure associated with such an arms conversion? If so, what is the time line and for what is the nature of it?

3) <span style="font-style: italic">“What I suspect is the Russian are looking for something that's a little bit more refined, a little bit more versatile, more accurate -- and their willing to sacrifice what the AK-47 brought in 1947."</span> If I remember the quote regarding Russian Arms it went something like 'There is a certain quality in quantity'. That makes me wonder if the potential small arms conversion recognizes both a shift in the nature of the battlefield as well as a shift in the population, armed forces, and mindset of Russia in this age.

Good luck

Invading Russia with their own guns for the win.

Re: Russians getting rid of the AK????

IMO it sounds like the Russian minister was saying that his country should make a newer and better assault rifle.

America is thinking about new rifles for its troops.

Russia thinks about new rifles for its troops.

Russia likes to play chess with us.

It's a New Cold War on all levels.

Re: Russians getting rid of the AK????

I think we are witnessing an internal Russian political squabble. Anyone who thinks the AK system is completely over the hill, especially as an assault rifle, has blinders on.

In another current thread essentially trashing the PSL, I think we got away from the basic core sensibility.

The AK works, and some of its more modern derivations, particularly the Saigas, deliver very adequate performance in a hunting context.

While I wouldn't choose a Saiga for a sniper role, I think it could handle a DMR Infantry support role very tidily. Chambered for .308 or .30-'06, I'd be careful to stay well out of range of anyone who's packing one and hot for my blood.

Re: Russians getting rid of the AK????

Serdukov, defence minister, is EXTREMELY unpopular with the russian military. He is widely regarded as a "village idiot".
I wouldn't pay any attention to what he says, he'll be likely gone pretty soon one way or the other.
