It 2 generations to do it but the berrel on my 300wbymag is about gone. It is a german mark V im keeping the same berrel contour. I have 2 questions.

1. what would you have the inside of the new barrel coated with to extend life??

2. if you would change the chambering what would you go with? this is only a hunting gun and i do reload. thanks

Re: s300wbymag rebarrel

The good thing about the 300roy is that it burns a ton of powder making a 180 fly at 3200.....the bad thing is that throat life is not so great. If you wore out a hunting weight 300, you must be pretty leatherd up in the shoulder....lol that's a lot of buck for the bang.

There is not much that bests the classic in that bolt face....I would go Roy again for sure.

Re: s300wbymag rebarrel

it was my grandfarthers i bought it from him at age 16 for $500 with all the reloading stuff. its has at least 1000 rounds down the tube 150gr nosler with 76 gr imr 4350. i love everything but the kick.

on the Melonite/Nitriding about how much more barrel life should i see on the next barrel??

What hide smith will work on a mark V?? thanks!!!

Re: s300wbymag rebarrel

As a side note, given the history of the rifle, I would keep the original tube and look at boring it to 338 and clean it up at 340 wby. If not definitely keep the tube for conversation....not many will wipe a 300 Roy barrel before they are sick of getting beat up.

Lastly, classic rust blue is the only way to finish such a piece IMO.

Re: s300wbymag rebarrel

The estimates vary but I have heard claims of nearly double life. Given that the process increases surface hardness by almost a factor of 2, it's not unrealistic to expect a significant increase in life. The finish you're left with can vary from quite flat to reasonably satin to low gloss depending on how it is processed.

There are plenty here that can do a fine job for you. I know of one guy that is a proponent of the nitride process so he might be someone to check with. Call RW Snyder at 712.655.3819.

</div></div>I must be an idiot..... Shot out 2 already. One in a 7 pound rifle over 2 years. I seem to have a problem with thinking they are a .22lr. But it sure is fun!
