So here is the thing my teammate and i both bought used sako trg 22's and had them rebarreled to 7mm08 with exact same specifications. So we were out practicing yesterday and we switched rifles for alittle while and we both noticed that my bolt lift after a fired round is noticeably stiffer than his.

Both of our rifles have had over 1000rds through them so should both be broken in i would think. i even tried putting his bolt in my rifle and it performed very smoothly so it is obviously something with the bolt.

    does anybody have any suggestions?

Polish the cocking ramp, and check the firing pin spring on both. If yours is harder to cock, it's got to be something related to cocking the spring (unless your loads are higher pressure.)

For some reason, this just sounds bad coming from you Jason.

We tried switching out all the internals and that didnt make much difference.
I think it must have to do with the bolt body or action ?

    Re: Sako TRG bolt lift?

Like BM11 said polish the cocking ramp on the bolt body. Also you may compair the rear of the locking lugs on both bolts and see if the stiff bolt lift bolt has gauling on the lugs, this could be the cause of the heavy lift. Is there any excessive wear on the body of the bolt, and is the "rear lug" (square peice of the bolt handle that attaches to the bolt body) showing any signs of wear to indicate missalignment in the action?

Did you try the bolt from the heavy lift rifle in the other to see if the heavy lift followed the bolt. I know you said you tried the light lift bolt in the heavy lift rifle and found it was ok.

    Re: Sako TRG bolt lift?

we tried switching all internals including individually to both rifles. I can't see any signs of gauling anywhere. it really is odd the only way to get it lighter was to use his actual bolt complete, individual parts did virtually nothing.

The only difference in our setups is that my bolt has been stripped and np3 coated but if anything that should make it smoother.

Don't get the wrong impression guys i absolutely love this rifle system and don't plan on changing anything other than maybe/hopefully some polishing.

Even though they removed the Sako coating the Robar NP3 would still add some thickness to the bolt. Call Robar and they will explain.

Don't know if this is a little too obvious, but since it is after the shot it sounds to me like you are borderline on your pressure and getting some case swelling. I would say back down on your loads a little and see if that helps.

No. He switched bolts in the rifles and the stickiness went with the bolt, not the rounds or chamber.

I am more inclined to think that your "Bolt" is bigger than Adam's, but ever so slightly. LOL
Ensure that you put a dab of lube on the back side of your lugs/and as an experiment try using a lighter load.

I promise it has absolutely nothing to do with the load since it is exactly the same even if there isn't a round in the chamber. I will try the lube thing

you guys are full of great info

    1. sell the rifle
    2. ship off rifle for fellow shooters testing

problem is if i take jason's advice eric i can't send it to you for 1000rd testing. Jason won't buy a trg he is to good for them, AI or nothing for him.

I know, but it seems like he has been feeling left out with all that Sako awesomeness in his backyard.

    Re: Sako TRG bolt lift?

Well after thoroughly reading the original post I think it may be in your loads, pos.a bit hot .... just kidding, sorry Josh I couldnt help it.

But seriously have you tried swapping bolts with out any internals, so only using the bolt bodys. That would tell you if its the o.d. of the bolt.

    thats a perfectly reasonable question!

i saw changing the bolts between rifles solved the problem, but he might be able to give the barrel a good clean, change ammo, or adjust his load slightly to ease the hard extraction.

are both rifles cleaned the same? are they both using the same ammo? does he have problems with one ammo type?

    Re: Sako TRG bolt lift?

Well i currently feel alittle silly, i dropped by benchmark barrels yesterday because we were in the area and added some grease to my bolt and it fixed the issue completely. his is still alittle better but just barely.

looks like it was a simple fix afterall thankfully!!! thanks again benchmark
