I got a Bell & Carlson Medalist stock and I am thinking about removing some fiberglass in the foregrip area. The stock is just too bulky and I would like to modify it to handle more like a McMillan A3. I have already Sanded out the barrel channel to accommodate the heavy barrel, and want to hear opinions on how slimming down the foregrip & possibly the pistol grip could adversely affect the strength or functionality. Thanks for any replies.

Chad, that hasn't been my experience with the B&C stock I had, and sanded the "flairs" off the fore end. Perhaps it isn't quite as ridgid as it once was (If it isn't, I haven't noticed), but it's more than adequate - and I load my bipod hard sometimes.

I used a belt-sander, and made short work of it. I then mixed up some Devcon 10110 and texturized the foregrip by raking an epoxy spreader (with little teeth) through, creating ridges. Nice improvement in my opinion. Handles/feels like an McM A3 now, the B&C is actually a little slimmer, even.

Re: Sanding a B&C Stock

The synthetic stocks I have worked on were functionally hollow with a filler inside a hard shell made of polymer and fiberglass material.

If you went through that shell...you would not have a durable surface.

YMMV.

Re: Sanding a B&C Stock

I have done it a few times. I use fiberglass boat hull repair kits to add it back to where I need it to go.

I like to use Devcon to bed with, PC-7 to add texture with, and any Fiberglass repair kit (Bondo brand is the last I used). I also like using a grinder with a wire brush for material remover...it works great.

Here is my latest DIY rifle.

The B&C's strength should not be significantly compromised, at least the Medalist line, they have a fairly substantial aluminum structure in them. You will want to go over it with some sort of fiberglass repair though to keep it from delaminating or otherwise deteriorating.
