Re: savage 10 FCP HS Precision

Hello,
I have the same model rifle. I like mine alot. It seems to shoot better when the barrel has a few rounds through it. I used to clean my weapons thoroughly (carbon and copper removed) every time they were shot. I typically only clean now after accuracy falls off. The barrel gets a patch with lock ease before and after a shooting session. Usual accuracy is less than an inch and around .5 inch at 100 yds. As a bonus my cold bore shot is pretty much the same POI as other rounds.

The change in POI you have seems odd so there may be an actual issue with your rifle/optics/mounts. You may have better results by cleaning less, maybe not. I say try the above for a while and if things don't improve then you can always pursue other options.

Re: savage 10 FCP HS Precision

My 10FPLE after a good scrubbing would have a spread of 1.25". After about 20 rounds, you could literally count on it shrinking the group size down close to 1/2" and sometimes 3/8".

This was consistantly happening after every thorough cleaning. Since then, I only ran a bore snake down the pipe after about every 100 rounds or so. I let the rifle tell me what it wanted, not what I thought it might need.

Don't over clean it... just shoot!!

Re: savage 10 FCP HS Precision

Hello,
It all depends on what you want to use the rifle for. I have another Savage in .243 win. and it has a 26 inch varmint barrel. I would love to have it shortened to 24 or even 22 inches. The 26 inch barrel is a little too unwieldy for my preference. I use my rifles for hunting as well as target shooting.

If you are just target shooting then a longer barrel may be just what you need. On the other hand if you intend to lug your rifle through the woods you would probably be better off with a shorter barrel.

I assume you mean Shilen barrels. They have a reputation for very good quality. One thing you might consider is using a headspace gauge and the appropriate tools, loosen the barrel nut and adjust your barrel to minimum headspace and retighten the barrel nut. Consider replacing your recoil lug while you have things apart. Savage likes to TIGHTEN the barrel nuts considerably at the factory. In my opinion this can induce significant stress and harm accuracy/consistancy.

I have a Remington PSS in .308 Win. and it copper fouls like crazy but shoots very accurate up to ~40 rounds, then it has to be cleaned. My Savages do not foul nearly as much as the Remington. The Savages are less accurate the first few shots but once they settle down they shoot more accurate and a lot longer before accuracy falls off again.

I did the above suggestions to my Savages and am satisfied. I would try these before buying a new barrel. If you are not satisfied or just want to replace your barrel then go for it.

Re: savage 10 FCP HS Precision

tighten the action screws. stop cleaning the barrel. make sure the base and scope are all tight. i run a 24" Shilen and i did the rebarrel myself. click my name, view my posts. there is a DIY on the barrel swap and the bolt lift kit i made.

i think my 24" is nose heavy, so try 24" or shorter. 30" is gonna be even more so

Re: savage 10 FCP HS Precision

Listen to the Axe, anything longer than 24 is gonna be a waste of your time and money, you may even like it shorter suach as 20 or 22. I have the same rifle you describe, I had it threaded for a suppressor and now i wish i had chopped off the last 2 inches when i did it. My rifle is quite accurate, and does not like to be cleaned, I have gone as many as 400ish rounds without cleaning it before, and even then it only took a couple patches to come clean. The only thing that i can attest to both the rifles dislike of cleaning and the lack of fouling is shortly after buying the rifle I ran the finer half of the "Final Finish"
lapping kit through it. Great rifle and it shoots better than me most days. I wouldn't mess with yours until you are sure of the culprit.

Re: savage 10 FCP HS Precision

My savage has a custom (LW) barrel, so I can't speak to rough barrel issues on the savage, but I bought a TC Encore barrel from a guy that said it shot well when new, but no more. I used CR10 for about an hour and it was badly copper fouled. Used Tubbs fire lapping bullets and now it consistently shoots well for 50+ rounds or more. I have used this successfully on several factory barrels now (Remmy, Win, Kimber).

This could be a problem and the solution, but it also might be bedding. Pressure on the rear tang of the savge by the stock is very destructive of accuracy. If the heating up of the rifle is causing movement because of a less that perfect bedding job, this also could be the problem (or pressure on the barrel if not free floated).
