I'am looking for a couple stock rifles that I can upgrade as fund become available, I want one in .308 and one in .223 and am wondering which is going to be the most relieable and best fit and finish out of the box with no qc issues. They both are going to be hunting/target guns no compation shooting.

Re: Savage 10fp or Remington sps tac.

I've had good luck with both brands in both calibers. The mag feed in the 223 savage was a pin till I squeezed the feed lips some. They both shoot great. About the same stuff is available for both brands so pick your poison. For a stock trigger savage gets the nod though.

Re: Savage 10fp or Remington sps tac.

As for the trigger, I would rather have the Remmy adjustable than the Savage, but that is all personal preference. Savage has had some issues with their trigger setup. That being said, many ways around a little trigger issue.
I have heard of Remington having QC issues lately but have yet to see it with my own eyes. I've bought a few new ones and all of them run great.
I've handled both guns and its really going to come down to you going and handling both. They are pretty equal as far as fit and finish IMO, but the Savage might edge out the Remington in that category (depends on who you talk to). I'm happy with my Remington, but have been eyeballing a savage closely.

Re: Savage 10fp or Remington sps tac.

Seems like Remington 700 parts dominate the market in both new and used. With that being said I personally perfer Remington because of it. Though the ease of changing the barrel on a Savage makes it very appealling. You do get what you pay for with either brand.

Re: Savage 10fp or Remington sps tac.

Both are great rifles. I have a savage 10 fcp hs and a good friend has the rem. Both shoot well and it depends on the driver as to the most accurate rifle. Rem does have more overall parts available....... KInda a Ford to Chevy to Dodge thing.... Choose your flavor ..they all get the job done in the right hands.

Re: Savage 10fp or Remington sps tac.

look at a few pages of this forum. go back 20-30 pages even and you will see the other 10 time this question has been asked. its a simple pattern. savage guys say savage, remmy guys say remmy, a few remmy guys will admit they like and own and even prefer savage now and someone will say tikka or howa.

either way i say savage. there is nothing made for a remmy that you cant get for a savage except AICS stocks. you can shoot 308 one day and 260 the next with a savage also. plus no gunsmithing charges. you can buy a remmy and convert to a savage style barrel nut system, but why? savage already has that. plenty of trigger options too if you dont like the accutrtigger. i have never had an issue with mine, others have with theirs.

savage. period.

Re: Savage 10fp or Remington sps tac.

You say you want a 223 and a 308 and you're choosing between two brands... Hmm, simple decision IMO

Get a 223 Savage and a 308 Remmy

OR

Get a 308 Savage and a 223 Remmy

And from there decide which you like better. Then sell the one you like less and get a model from the other brand that you decided was better for you in the same caliber that you just sold the other in. Both are great guns. Each have their advantages. Get one of each and decide which you like best. You're getting two guns anyways, decide for yourself

Well, until about wo days ago I might have agreed with you. I just found out about the Savage nut on a Rem action you see.

In addition to the AICS stock, most stocks will not accomodate teh new 4.4" action length, you cannot get a decent DBM setup for the new 4.4" action yet, and there are not nearly as many trigger options for Savage, there are nowhere near the aftermarket goodies for Savages yet (Savages fault in part for changing the action or something else every time you blink).

I will be doing the Savage nut conversion on one if not both of my Rem's in the near future!!

Re: Savage 10fp or Remington sps tac.

have you not seen CDI bottom metal or VBull? manners, HS and mcmillan all make stocks for the 4.40" and a simple pillar bed will, or should fix the difference between the old spacing and the new. you dont need 100 triggers when the RB-2 and SSS work so well. we have more than enough options to get by. and eventually we will have more.

not taking anything away from remmy. i have never owned or held one. maybe held, just never cycled the action. but the companies that make the stocks for the old actions will eventually make them for the new spacing too. and i agree about the changes, i dont get the new bolt release.

im just waiting for the first floating bolthead conversion for remmys. thats going to crack me up.

and im not attacking you at all, but what other goodies are you talking about?

Re: Savage 10fp or Remington sps tac.

I have a few of both Savages and Remingtons, nothing truly custom like a GAP. I like them both, they both have their perks. Savage is easier for do it yourself mods I think. Either will be fine.

Re: Savage 10fp or Remington sps tac.

Axeman is correct, Savage guys say Savage, Remmy guys say Remmy, it's a endless cycle. I have basically $1200 in my rifle, I bought it 11 years ago for $340 and had it worked on 2 years ago and put a new stock on it, trigger, and barrel. Some folks ask me why I didn't get a GAP since their here in town, and my reasoning was that I didn't have the money.

To me (this is my opinion, and not a statement of fact), custom rifles just aren't worth the money. I've shot some custom rifles, and shot next to a lot of custom rifles, and don't see the benefit when my rifle that costs 1/3 as much shoots just as good, and/or better occasionally. If I were shooting benchrest, or f-class, different story.

Re: Savage 10fp or Remington sps tac.

I have both and like both, I say remington if you want to upgrade. If you buy either you will be better of than not having either. Get to shooting. Both go bang and send the bullet wher you tell it to.

Re: Savage 10fp or Remington sps tac.

i just say remmy cause thats what i have. shot the savage but the remmy just does it for me i guess... dont think you can go wrong either way though

Re: Savage 10fp or Remington sps tac.

I don't like the looks of the 20" barrels personally so that would make that decision on those two for me...I know the FP is just 2" longer but it does look different and better to me.

I have learned it is all personal preference between those two.

Re: Savage 10fp or Remington sps tac.

Only reason to go savage is the barrel swap, which would be good for 223 to get a 1/8 twist barrel put on.

Beyond that it's a glock vs 1911, 9mm vs 45, blondes or brunettes.

Both will outshoot most people anyhow.

Re: Savage 10fp or Remington sps tac.

I have a .308 Savage 10FP-LE1 in 20" and I havent' had a single problem with it. I got it new for $550 from bigskyguns.com a few year back. Added a cheek piece, knock off bipod and cheap scope for a couple hundred extra. Left the stock on it that it shipped with, just added my own paint. It's pillar bedded and works well enough for what I do with it. I'm planning on putting a nice OD green Hogue on it soon. Love the Accu-trigger.

This is it with the old 6-24X50mm Leapers scope on it. I changed it out with a 4-16X40mm Leapers mostly because I didn't like the profile with the longer scope and I hardly ever take it passed 10X.
