If I were to be purchasing a new savage in .308 caliber and was looking to drop it in an aftermarket stock, can you tell me the difference between the Savage 11 hog hunter and a Savage 10 model in regards to barreled action?

Is there anything different between the two models that would make it worth spending the extra coin on the model 10? Again, if I were to be purchasing to drop in an aftermarket stock like an AICS.

Thanks.

I have a Savage 10 FCP SR 5r in 308, Firstly its is a tack driver. Also it comes with a heavy contour fluted barrel the hog hunter is a lighter barrel contour and it has fixed sights on the barrel i believe.

The Savage AICS is top bolt release ONLY; the new-style bottom bolt release will not fit.

The 11 Hog Hunter is top bolt release, with accutrigger and threaded barrel, and a dogpile tupperware stock. Given is street price around $450, it is a very popular candidate to drop into any aftermarket stock, including the AICS.

That said, the 10FP-SR is also a top bolt release action and would drop right into the AICS as well.

Compared to the 11 Hog Hunter, the 10FP-SR has 1. a slightly heavier barrel contour (Varmint vs. the Hog Hunter's medium/light varmint contour), 2. 2" longer barrel, 3. a (marginally) better stock and a DBM (which you won't need if you drop into an AICS) and 4. no iron sights to remove. It also runs ~$175 more $$$ than the Hog Hunter.

So it appears that the only big difference if dropping it into an AICS stock is the barrel contour.

I'm thinking that the since this is for hunting the lighter barrel contour would be fine. Plus my up front costs would be less.

Any other comments, suggestions, or recommendations on this?

If you want the rig for hunting then you may want to reconsider the AICS or buy a model with a decent enough monte carlo stock for hunting and drop it in the AICS for target shooting. The AICS is great for prone or bench shooting but not so much for walking thru the woods or fields looking for bambi.

If it helps, I bought a Hug Hunter and absolutely love it. I put a JP Cooley brake on it and it shoots 0.5" MOA with 168 grain FGMM. My best group was 1/4 inch at 100 yards. In the factory stock by the way. But most people I've talked to have replaced the stock.

Tagging off of this...I have a Savage 10 Precision Carbine that is also a bottom bolt release. Is that going to be a big deterrent if I want to drop the barreled action into any type of aftermarket chassis?

Idk about xlr, jae etc.. but it def wont fit into AICS. If you are set on AICS sell yours and get either hog hunter or 10FP-SR. Hog should be around$450 and 10FP-SR around $650.
