Savage 110 Scout vs Ruger American Ranch in 450 Bushmaster

Need to pick up a rifle for Ohio deer hunting so going w/ 450 Bushmaster as cartridge. Between Savage 110 Scout vs Ruger American Ranch which is better. Obviously not expecting a great stock but really don't like flimsy stocks. Leaning towards Savage but do not have a good reason. Any other rifles that I should consider? Not set on bolt action - how would a Ruger AR-556 compare?

Would hope to get 1 to 2 moa at 250 yards in field conditions. Can these rifles achieve that?

The Ruger American can- I also hated the flimsy stock - but it shoots , farthest shot to date a lazed 187 yards . Bang three or 4 stumbling jumps and down he went .

I have the gen one and first thing I did was polish the bolt and now it runs smoothly and quietly.

I’d say either will more then serve your needs - they are not precision premium rifles they are rack grade box store rifles that shoot fairly well and start at a price point that buying another stock or changing the trigger isn’t a big deal.

Apparently people have issues with Savage, I've always loved mine. My $350 12fv in 6.5 Creedmoor shoots absolutely lights out groups with lighter factory ammo.

That being said, extraction/ejection issues are a real thing with Savages, mine has it and I still haven't managed to get it fixed.

Have a Savage 110 Storm in .223. Several hundred rounds, never once failed to extract or eject. That’s just a sample of one, however. If you have an opportunity to cycle rounds before buying, that would be ideal. In general, with Savage rifles, one thing you don’t have to worry about is whether or not it’ll put metal on target.
My Model 12 LRPV, which is a higher end, AKA more expensive, model has 2K rounds through it and has yet to fail to extract and eject, and does so with authority.

Yeah my 12FV originally did not do a great job on the ejection part. Working with some Kinney's aftermarket parts to try and fix it.

That being said, I want to reiterate that I like the rifle. The accuracy for a $350 gun out of the box was jaw dropping.

Ruger American Ranch, far better action. Also the Ruger is listed as 1-16 and the Savage is listed as 1-24.

Yeah, I've got both Savage and Ruger American rifles.

Ruger offering the Ranch in 308 and 6.5 Creedmoor makes for what would be a nice inexpensive throwdown hunting rifle for around here.

Don't have one but after reading the specs and field reports from those that do I'd go with the Savage because of the better stock adjustment, magazine reliability and accuracy.
The Scout is heavier than the Ranch rifle if weight is a consideration.

Is the ruger action better? The Ruger is less expensive by about $300. What about buying the Ruger & putting on a B&C stock? Or for that matter, semi-autos are legal in OH - what about a Ruger AR-556. Not as convenient to carry, but it's not like I'll be stalking. Get to a blind & wait...

The Ruger American action isn't the better M77 action with controlled feed.
You need to decide on what type of firearm is best for you.
If you already have an AR, you could buy a 450BM upper and a few magazines and have them shipped to your abode.
Plenty of used 450BM rifles out there too.

What about the Ruger Gunsite Scout? It is based on the M77 action. How accurate is this rifle? The walnut stock would feel good but not sure if it is free floated.

When I had a Ruger M77 the barrel wasn’t free floated. They left a “pressure pad” of wood at the front of the stock that would contact the barrel.

If I were buying a new budget rifle today, I would go with the Ruger American Gen 2 over the Savage. That’s even though I have a Savage 10 FCPSR that shoots great, and I haven’t had extraction or ejection issues. The only problem I had with the Savage when new is that the scope rail was loose and the front screw threads were stripped from the factory. The Ruger American Gen 1 I had was perfectly functional and shot well. There were some sharp edges on the metal and the receiver was internally rough, so the bolt had a zipper sound until i polished it, after which it was super smooth.

Have both of these rifles in 450BM and they shoot equally well. Both obviously have chincy stocks. If you're not dead set on these take a look at the CVA cascade xt. I also have it in 450BM, shoots phenomenal, and the stock is nicer.
