If you were starting out with bolt action precision and were on a tight budget, how do you guys feel about the new Savage 110 Trail Hunter Lite? Person buying this likes to tinker a modify as they learn and was curious about this.

Probably not the right crowd here, but I have friends who have some really nice rifles and still always go back to using savages.

They are good accurate rifles in general. Just dont have the same fit and finish as some higher end rifles. I also bought my kid the ultra lite model with the proof barrel and I dont feel like its going to cost him any opportunities on game.

No, not the right crowd. Had a 110 action in a Storm hunting rifle. Wasn’t hunting with it, I like the action ( not as smooth as my Tikka, of course, but pretty darn good and it’s been functionally flawless), so decided to drop it into an MDT stock and rebarreled with a Shilen SS 26” match barrel to make it into a fun range rifle. Have really enjoyed it.
The 110 line is the grade up from the budget Axis line, which is the one I think most people think of when they hear “ Savage”.
For someone of modest means ( AKA “ Poors “ in what is at times rather unfortunate SH vernacular), and just based on one guy’s experience, I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend a 110 as a basic, no frills hunting rifle.

This is just my opinion based on my experience… Savages as hunting rifles, precision hunting, long range hunting etc, are excellent. Savages in a timed competition setting where feeding and extraction are crucial, not recommended. Again, this was my experience and I speak only of it.

Savage makes a TERRIBLE magazine, and the extraction / ejection issues , which I’ve been fortunate enough not to encounter, in many cases lend themselves to an easy fix, or at the very least improvement. But the customer shouldn’t have to. Those are both long term issues and sources of customer complaints and I’ve NEVER understood why Savage senior management apparently simply chooses to ignore them instead of making them a top corporate goal for resolution.

A rifle is a tool.
Some like gold plated tools to strut around with, some like plain jane tools to actually use as a tool.
Savage is the plain jane tool used by millions of hunters and shooters worldwide since 1894.
Buy it, use it and move on if you need to.
Just don't expect the same out of the box accuracy with other manufacturers rifles.
If needed a $30 dollar extractor kit will fix the extraction issue.
If needed an aftermarket stock with AICS magazine will solve the magazine issue.
Shoot and enjoy life.

I will start by saying I am a savage fan boy. I do have many other manufacturers also.
Honestly I hear boyds makes the varmint stock for CVA cascades now and that's the direction I would go for an "inexpensive" barreled action or HOWA heavy 24" barreled action.

That little CVA action is pretty slick and that 70 degree bolt throw is nice.
