My sons are bugging me for a big mofo "toy" for the range.

We each have our "dedicated" long-range guns (6.5's, 7-08's) for the 1000 yard range, but they (and I have to admit, I share it a bit) want one of the big boys to "share" when we go...

I know that at "only" 1000 yards other chamberings like the .300 WM are very capable, and cheaper to shoot- not the point of this exercise.

Given this will be "lightly" used, I'm considering the Savages due to the inexpensive cost- and please, Savage haters- not here...

    Two questions-

Is there a difference in the ACTION used in the 111 LRH and the 110 FCP, and the 110 BA? Or is the higher cost of the BA due to the chassis?

    Second:

I spoke with Jim at Northland regarding availability of these actions, and as he explained they're "not"- he also mentioned that "there is some concern" about the strength of the actions (specifically bolt thrust) used by Savage. I didn't have the time to press him for more details, but I have NEVER heard of a Savage action, or bolt, failing on their .338 LM's. Anyone with factual knowledge to back up his concern?

So, I'm checking to see if there are any facts that would dissuade me from buying the 111 LRH (I plan to make a custom stock for it) for occasional use at 1000 yds.

    Fire away...

I have the 110 BA in 300 Win Mag. It if you handload, you can get some really good accuracy out of them. This group was a 7 shot group from 100 yds.

I have the short action 11 LRH in 6.5 Creedmoor. As a "long range hunting" rifle it fits the bill - light enough and accurate, however with the profile of the barrel on my 6.5 groups definitely open up after 5 rounds shot in a few minutes. This may or may not be a concern for you, but with the 338 and a hunter profile barrel I can only suspect heat would be even more of an issue.

You raise an interesting point about the barrel profile. They're all 26", but the FCP and BA are fluted and I need to check their profile to make sure they're heavier.
