So I have a model 112 long action (single shot) in 220 swift and im thinking of building a long range rifle off that action. Im currently looking at a 7mm ultra mag as my first choice and possibly a 6.5-300 win as my second choice. Ive never done any builds before and kinda lost on triggers/stocks/and barrel lengths for those calibers. Any input on calibers etc etc would be greatly appreciated.

Well first off you will need a new bolt face for that. A 220 Swift has a much smaller bolt face than any magnum cartridge.

As far as the rest of the questions go, I would ask whatever gunsmith you are planning on doing your build, unless you want to do it yourself. There are dozens upon dozens of different kinds of stocks and chassis out there for Savages, so figure out what you like and go from there. Find someone who has some different stocks and see which one feels right in your hands.

For those calibers, get a heavy contour barrel (I would go at least varmint/sendero) and 24"-28". Any longer is really just extra weight.

For triggers, just read some reviews and try one out, you can always change it out down the road. I have 1.5# Timney triggers in almost all of my guns, but that's just my preference.

And out of curiosity, was your 220 Swift built on a long action? I always thought that was a short action cartridge.

Thanks for the reply. Ive also heard that the single shot 112 long actions make great actions to build off of accuracy wise. Heard anything similiar? The Swift came factory in the single shot 112 long action. I love the fixed floor plate. They are pretty hard to find now days i believe. Its a great shooter, just looking for something with a little more pop. Will def go with a 26" barrel.

Ive contaced a few Gunsmiths that are always mentioned on here. No replies as of yet.

Savage 112 Long Action Build

Its a Savage - no need for a smith, swap the bolt head and barrel yourself. Call Jim Briggs @ Northland Shooters Supply and see what barrels he has in stock, or have Jim @ Apache Gun Works spin you something up.

The world is your oyster, from 17 Fireball to 338 Edge only a barrel and bolt head away.
