Alright yall I need a little help-advice please. Ive already got a couple of post up about a future build Im getting ready for. Ive been looking around at the pawn shops, and differant stores lately but cant find any savage actions to look at. Im wanting to build a 7mm mag, on a savage action. My question is since I cant find any to look at from the 10-16 action, is there an ideal action to look for? I hope that came out clear. I am already planing on changing the barrel and stock, so the looks of the gun dosnt bother me. Im just wondering if one is better than the other for what I plan on doing? Its looking like I may have to resort to gunbroker to get the gun Im looking for. I have never messed with a savage, so I would apreciate any help and advice yall could give. Thanks

Re: savage help please

You will need a long action. the 10-16 are short actions. The 110-116 are the long actions. Jim Briggs of Northland Shooter Supply probably has the bare bones actions in stock. That is probably the way to go since you are going to be swapping out the barrel and stock. He also deals the Criterion pre-fits which are top notch.

Re: savage help please

Buy a Stevens 200 in a long action unless you have your heart set on an accu-trigger. Jim at NSS sales Stevens for $235 add $18.00 for shipping and you are well on your way. The Stevens actions and Savage actions are identical with the exception of the accu-trigger models or just look for a cheap Savage at the pawn shops. There are no differences in the Savage actions between model numbers unless it is a stainless steel then the only difference is the material used to make the action. One thing to look out for is the ultra-mag actions which have the large barrel shank. Nothing wrong with them just less barrels to choose from on the market. Oh yes one difference would be center feed and staggered feed actions. Long actions have the same action screw spacing but the stocks are a pain in the butt to switch back and forth without some tinkering.

Re: savage help please

what those guys said. i just bought an old but little used build on a 10 in 308. getting just the action is the way to go. you should likely go for a new trigger. there are several around for the savage these days. the accu trigger is good for a factory deal, but, not up to the kind of quality you are going for.

Re: savage help please

Thanks guys, this will all be a new learning process since I have never built a "big" gun. All I have messed with is 10-22s. Maybe I have missed something but as far as the straight or stagered feed does that make a differance in the stock? Also it has probably been asked ALOT on here but could yall suggest a good barrel please? I have been looking at Shilen, and I dont have anythig against them i just dont know if there might be something better for about the same money. Im trying to build a budget gun so the less money the better, Im not saying I want dirt cheap, but this gun will be used more for hunting than anything. Guys Im sorry if Im asking repeated questions, but I done a search for Savage and there was a lot of info but not to much on a 7mag like I looking for. Oh when yall say the Stevens and Savage are the same Im guessing the stevens has a floating action correct? Again thanks for the help.

Re: savage help please

Yes the stocks make a difference the center feed actions have a mag box that snaps in the stock as apposed to a magazine that is attached to the action (staggered feed). Now if you are going with a DBM long actions will not make a difference either way since the bolt spacing is the same. Yes Stevens have the floating bolt head there are no differences in the actions other than one says Stevens on the bolt the other says Savage.

Re: savage help please

He means detachable box magazine ( DBM)....not one that's built inside the stock.

Jim at NSS sells actions...he lists long actions as being out of stock. You could call him and see when he could get one for you. Here's his contact info.: From Jim's web area on Savage Shooters forum:

Re: savage help please

As long as you have a "go gage" for your chosen round, some tools ( action vise and barrel nut wrench) and patience...it will only take you minutes to headspace and secure the nut...after that..put the barreled action in the stock and you're done.
