hey everybody this is my first post.
i want a gun for mainly whitetail and muledeer out to 1000yds with the occasional pronghorn and elk hunt but mainly deer.
i dont want to spend more than i have to. i dont reload yet. after seaching and reading quite a bit my two main choices are

1. Remington 700 5R in 300WM which i can get for around $1100
and
2. Savage Long Range Hunter in 7mmRM or 300WM for Around $800

Optics is a separate issue and i want to decide on the gun first

as for ammo since i dont reload yet i was thinking HSM Berger VLD's

Help me out please

Re: Savage Long Range Hunter vs Remington 5R

How much shooting do you do at 700-1000 YDS. Thats a long shot to be shooting at game if you don't practice a lot. Both choices will be good ones but I would not personally be shooting at game past 600 yds, but that's just me. You may have the talent to ethicaly take game at those yardages.

This is a Sniper's Hide specific search engine.

You are going to want to use this in the future prior to asking questions to see if the topic has been covered in the past.....Which your topic most definitely has.

It will require you to read through a lot of threads/posts but you will no doubt gain knowledge aside from your stated purpose.

Re: Savage Long Range Hunter vs Remington 5R

My experience trying to use "search" just shows me a couple pages of the most recent posts. When I try to use the advance "search" it tells me I am not authorized.

Maybe you could tell us how to use it correctly.

Re: Savage Long Range Hunter vs Remington 5R

i havent done alot of shooting past 650yds. right now i shoot a savage 110 in 270win and am good with that to 600, and have taken a whitetail buck at 525 and a doe at 540. i know after 600 things get alot more difficultand i wouldnt be shooting at game until im comfortable at the range.

i just want a more accurate gun in a better long range caliber. and would like to know if anyone has experiance with both rifles i listed or a different one in that price range. for what i want to do.

Re: Savage Long Range Hunter vs Remington 5R

7mm. By far better bullets than 30s and also because it's a savage. Being able to change calibers and barrels in 15min is awesome.

Good luck,
Merritt

Re: Savage Long Range Hunter vs Remington 5R

300 WM is a great round if you are not bothered by recoil, and the 5R is a good package. 7mag recoils less than the 300WM, and is plenty for deer, but the next step to consider might be reloading.

Long range success is more about ballistics and bullets than caliber, and custom loaded ammo will wring the best long range performance from any of these calibers.

The 270 is a great hunting round, but is not popular in the LR shooting community due to limited bullet choices. That trend is changing somewhat now, and the 270 will perform very well at long range with the same Berger VLDs, and not be too far behind the 7mm at less recoil cost.

If reloading is really not an option, you will need to see if good LR ammo is available in any caliber, and pick the rifle to shoot it.

so is the 5R worth the extra money? there is a used (just a raffle gun never been shot)savage LRH in 7mm at scheels here for $650 and 5R is about $1100 everywhere i look.

Re: Savage Long Range Hunter vs Remington 5R

I have a 5r in 300WM. It is a great gun no doubt, but a bit heavy. IF this is going to be your primary hunting gun you might want to lighten up a bit. I do use mine for elk hunting, but that is 2 times a year the rest is used for long range out in the desert. The 7mm mag is a great round same with the savage's. My last setup was a 7mm mag in a savage it worked really well and as others have stated you can load up great rounds for it and for the 300WM. I am looking at putting a brake on my 300 to take some bite out of it.

BTW you can find the 5r a bit cheaper if you look around. I got mine around $900
