I had the exact same rifle and I saw huge gains by adding pillars. Group size shrunk a little, but more importantly my zero stopped shifting due to drastic weather changes and I was able to get consistent torque on the action screws without worrying about crushing the stock. I had planned on skim bedding it afterwards, but I was happy enough with just pillars that I left it that way.
After the pillars were installed I set both at 30 in/lbs. then shot a group and went up 5 in/lbs. at a time to find a sweet spot. I dont remember what I settled on though.
I have a mark ll tr. Interested in what kind of average groups you are getting with it currently and what ammo you are shooting
Colt45,,,If you are talking about standard velocity, groups @ 50 yds generally go from .3-.6". Now, thats a wide variety of ammo from CCI standard to Lapua Midas+. When I go supersonic .6-1.0". I don't know if I will gain any accuracy from going to pillared and bedded , but I know the rifle will be set up right.
Thanks your results mimic mine. I have been looking to get some lapua midas or centerx, sk match to test. This is shot with cci sv. Rifle is stock. Debating on putting some work into it or just build a custom.
On its best day my savage would shoot right around .5 in. at 50 yards using SK RM before I added the pillars, but that was only on its best days. Other days I would get larger groups due to the wood swelling or shrinking. After adding the pillars it would consistently shooting around .5, or just under pretty much any day I took it out from middle of winter to the middle of summer. I saw a little accuracy increase, although that could have been a result of me putting more time into it after I added the pillars.
I wouldnt expect a huge difference from your best groups. You may get a little better accuracy, but for me it was the consistency that made the difference.
