I finally got some time to give a range report from my new Savage Precision Carbine in .308. My wife bought me this rifle for my birthday in April (pretty cool eh?) and I then bought a Vortex Viper 6-20x50mm from Scott at Liberty Optics (excellent service) to put on top of it. I plan on using this rifle for pig / deer hunting since its pretty lightweight and nice to tote around since it only has a 20 inch barrel.

Here are the specs and some pics -

Savage Model 10 Precision Carbine .308 win
Vortex Viper 6-20x50mm w/ mil-dot reticle
Leupold Mark 4 30mm medium rings
Warne Savage base
Harris swivel w/leg notch bipod

I have 220 rounds through this rifle now and. This last Saturday I fired 40 rounds and here is the two best five shot groups, one is slightly under .5 inches and the other is slightly more than .5 inches at 100 yards.

This is with Hornady match brass 3x fired, 42gr varget, CCI BR2 primers, 168gr SMK, 2.805" COAL.

So far I have really enjoyed this rifle, for a completely factory rifle its shooting 1/2 MOA already and I really haven't fully dialed in my handloads yet. For ~ $700 its a hell of a deal.

I love mine. Interestinly, mine likes fairly low-pressure loads too. I'm running 40.8gr Varget with a 165 SST.

Yeah the lower pressure seems to work well for it. Although I have not tried over 43.5 gr of varget yet. I was keeping the charge modest to keep the brass life long.

Have you tried any other powders with your PC? I am looking at trying different loads but cannot find much load data on these rifles....

Re: Savage Model 10 Precision Carbine 308 Range Report

I had a wonderful load of IMR 4895. I picked that powder because it was close to the fast end for the 308 so I was hoping for good performance out of the short barrel. I was getting great groups until I shot it once at around zero degrees F. I was getting about a 3" group. A litter interweb research showed that 4895 can be very temp sensitive. Varget has given me slightly larger groups but they are the same all the time.

One other point of interest is that with both my 4895 load and my Varget load I am pretty sure my MV is higher than the book shows. And the book says it's data is from a 24" barrel. I haven't shot them through a chrony. It's just that my trajectory seems to be quite a bit flatter than the manual would suggest.

Re: Savage Model 10 Precision Carbine 308 Range Report

Maybe I will give IMR 4895 a try, the weather here is very mild.

What kind of loads were you doing with 4895, and what bullets and COAL are you using?

Re: Savage Model 10 Precision Carbine 308 Range Report

Did either of you put a 20 MOA base on your rifle and if so did you have any problems sighting in? I put a 20 MOA base on mine and still shoot 3" Hugh at 100 yards maced out on - elevation. Switching to 0 MOA base to see if that fixes it.

Re: Savage Model 10 Precision Carbine 308 Range Report

my 20moa worked fine. i had plenty of room to zero. 3 shots and i was on the center with a mil/mil millett 4-16x with room to go further down

My first load was Nosler brass, Hornady 165 SST, 40.3 gr IMR 4895, WLR primer. COL 2.803" Best 5-shot group was .65" @ 100 yards.

I have a 20 MOA EGW base on mine. I have a Bushnell 3200 5-15 tactical on and it zeroed without any problems.

Re: Savage Model 10 Precision Carbine 308 Range Report

I hope to have one of these in my possession sometime soon. I have been shooting Savage for only 2 years now, but I have been nothing but impressed with them.

Accuracy out of the box with my 10FPLE was awesome. I changed stocks over to a Varmint Low Profile, and the shooting was incredible!!

I am looking really hard at the PC for use with a can. The accustock will serve well and I won't have to purchase another stock and driving up the price. I just can't see any negatives to going this route. Rock on with the Savages!!

Re: Savage Model 10 Precision Carbine 308 Range Report

I'm very happy with my 10BAS-K. It has been shooting sub .5moa right out of the box with handloads. It also seem to be getting better as it gets some rounds through it. I have no problem thinking about Savage in the future and recommending them to others. Nice features, great pricing and accurate as anything out there.

Re: Savage Model 10 Precision Carbine 308 Range Report

I am not normally a fan of shorter rifles, but both the 10PC and Predator have impressed me with their performance as personally witnessed. In the hands of folks who are learning, and in the hands of folks who are rather a bit further down that same road, they achieve very satisfying and motivating results.

Re: Savage Model 10 Precision Carbine 308 Range Report

I built my own 10PC on a Stevens SA reciever and a Choate stock with a factory barrel cut to 20" and 11 degree crown, just got my rings this week. Trying to find some Black Hills .308 to sight it in with, I love the feel and balance of the rifle with the 20" barrel.

Re: Savage Model 10 Precision Carbine 308 Range Report

I just ordered a McMillian A3 stock for my first Savage build. Will be buying stainless target action and Brux barrel from SSS. Anything else I should be looking for?

What about the fluted bolt, what is the advantage or disadvantage? Don't mean to hijack the thread, though.

In general, any accuracy recommended upgrades for Savage? My will be in .223, and plan on ordering a 26", 8 twist barrel.

Go ahead and order the recoil lug from SSS when you order the barrel, they are made to much tighter tolerances.
