Savage Model 10 precision carbine

Re: Savage Model 10 precision carbine

From all reports, shoots well and good price. If it has the bolt release on the trigger guard, there are fewer aftermarket stock available.

Re: Savage Model 10 precision carbine

I have the 308 5R version. It is my first rifle specifically for long range. From a novice perspective it was a good purchase. Added a base, rings, and optic and it was ready to roll. I can't complain about the trigger and the overall weight is not an issue. On the flip side the stock finish is not that durable and the lack of adjustment (cheek riser) is a drawback for me. I had to add a riser/stock saddle and will likely change the 50mm scope and rings out for a 42mm or 44mm so I can get it a little lower. I have less than 100 rounds though it and the action doesn't feel smooth. Overall though for a reasonable cost I am able to identify the features I want and those I don't need when I purchase my next rifle.

I am rather new to rifle shooting. I have the model 10 in 308 with the Choate tactical stock and it shoots under 1 MOA at 100 with the factory barrel. As said above if the bolt release is in the trigger guard it is quite hard to find after market stocks for it. If it is the side release then there are more options, though not as many as the 700 action.

Check out the 10 FCP-SR. It has a similar stock, but a slightly longer barrel. It also comes with a 10round DBM, top mounted bolt release (easier to find stocks), and a 20 MOA EGW rail. I own one and it is a great rifle! Hard to beat the value of all the extras at a price point of only $950.

Re: Savage Model 10 precision carbine

Not quite true regarding the bottom bolt release design. Any stock made for a model 10 short action center feed with the 4.41 bolt spacing will work. At the very worst you have a little dremel work to do.
Further more, bottom metal its also a non issue as far as I'm concerned, as CDI makes bottom metal for it. And the ONLY difference between the bottom and top bolt release style of savage actions is the sear, and removing about .080 off the side of the receiver.
Anyone with a lathe can machine the receiver, and any gunsmith can order the sear. Its like $10...
