hey guys new here. I am looking for new .223 varmint/coyote/mostly target gun. I am looking at the following.

Savage Precision Hunter max 1
Savage model 12 low profile with detachable mag
Browning X-bolt Varmint Stalker
Thompson Center Icon Precision Hunter

Please let me know what you guys think. I know I know everyone likes the 22-250 for coyotes but i like to see what i hit with the .223 when i am target shooting and i like the variation of bullets. But i do like the 22-250 as well.

Thanks

The Icon will be the nicest built on the list. Fit and finish are very good. No stamped steel parts like on the Savages. Not much for aftermarket parts available but it already has a detatchable mag. Stock has a good bedding block with three recoil lugs, very good accuracy from the factory. Savages are darn good shooters. I just can't live with the goofy barrel nut and cheap looking stamped parts. Not a fan of the x-bolt either.

I see you have a Remington 700. I really dont like remingtons but its because i dont have much personal time with them if any. Out of the box how would a rem 700 vsl be varmint gun. There bulky but with some work could be a good gun. I really dont want to work on one though. Let me know and thanks for your opinion.

all the savage guys will say savage, the remmy guys will say remmy, someone will say try tikka and/or howa. i bought a savage. could just as easily bought a 700. i just liked the options for the factory savage stocks. had i known it would be way easier to get a 700 in a mcmilllan A4 than my savage, i may have bought 700. just because used A4s for the 700 are common. i have to order new for a savage. but thats only a matter of money and time. oh and the only time you notice the barrel nut on a savage is when your saving money and taking it off yourself instead of paying a smith, lol

The better Rem. 700's with the HS precision stock can shoot quite a bit under an inch at 100yds. My old 5R milspec shot 5/8" average 5 shot groups with match or handload ammo. Granted, this was a .308. The heavy barrel versions seem to be quite accurate. The 700 is easy to work on, and almost every aftermarket part is available for these. Triggers from the factory are not that great but nearly every gunsmith alive can adjust them to be fantastic. Hate to sound like a fanboy, but I have had great luck with them. I wouldn't get another kind of rifle unless it was a full custom. On another note, my father bought a T/C Icon in 308 and it is a darn good shooter and much nicer fit and finish than anything else in the price range. If you do decide on a Remington, make it a 700 and make sure it has a good stock. Sendero, 5R milspec, vs-sf, 700P.

100% true. I grew up hunting with Winchester 94's, my good friend- Savage lever guns. We both hate eachother's family heirlooms.
