I helped a buddy of mine put a Mcgowen prefit barrel on his Savage and after we adjusted headspace and tightened the barrel nut down the lettering was top dead center. Is that right ?

it reay depends on the setup , some actions may have the lettering upside down on the wrong side or the bottom.
Depends on what your using for the "GO" gage , I generaly use a FL resized case to set the headspace this way the camber if setup so that I can FL size my brass and its getting worked very little

I have done this and factory ammo would not chamber so thats somthing to think about.
I have also heard of guys using whatever ammo they want to shoot as the "GO" gage , it just seems like a bad idea to use a live round for that job.

yeah, most letter after the barrel is installed so its indexed properly. set the headspace and shoot
