I have a savage action and want to re-barrel it. How does the large/small shank work? I see that the large shanks are primarily for the wsm and magnums but I want a bull/target contour and I only see them in large shank. So would all I have to get is a large barrel lug? The threads arnt different are they?

Re: Savage question???

ok, your rifle is a small shank action, yes the small and large shanks are different threads... for an 18 barrel you're going to have to get it made or have one that' premade for the savages cut down...

If you want to buy one then have it cut down, here's a link to midway http://www.midwayusa.com/Product/510747/...stainless-steel

that's a Varmint contour... what MOST people call a bull barrel, it measures .840-.850" at the muzzle

if you want to have one made, I suggest calling benchmark barrels @(360) 652-2594

Re: Savage question???

I have a full bull on a stevens and it measures 1.350 all the way to the muzzle.Jim at northland has some of the best prices on aftermarket barrels.I have used shilen and mcgowen. My mcgowen is the most accurate so far.

Re: Savage question???

+1 for Jim. He has alot of barrels in stock that can probably suit your needs or maybe even a take off barrel that is still in very good shape. He knows what he's doing. Make sure to get yourself a new barrel nut and recoil lug when you do the barrel. DON'T REUSE YOUR OLD RECOIL LUG NO MATTER WHAT YOU DO! Most of the factory lugs are warped and do not make for a good reassembly. It will cost you another $30 or so to replace and well worth the money. The barrel nut is not as important, but I replace em both for the minimal cost. If Jim has a barrel, see if he can cut it down..I'm not sure if he can, but I'm pretty sure he can. Goodluck

Re: Savage question???

+2 on Jim, best resource for Savage fitted barrels, recoil lugs and factory parts (action). If you're looking for a new barrel, ask Jim about the CBI barrels.

SSS has good after market parts like triggers and bolt handles, but Jim is so much easier to deal with.

Re: Savage question???

One of the downsides to the Savage/Stevens barrel nut setup is that the shank of the barrel has to be small enough to accommodate the barrel nut. Most of the guys where I am do away with the barrel nut when they have a custom barrel fit to their Savage/Stevens. This way you can go with a heavy profile barrel.

A shooting acquaintance of mine just had his Savage rebarreled with a Krieger heavy varmint barrel and it came out looking very nice.

Re: Savage question???

I've had a couple Savage rifles set up 'nutless'... which drove me absolutely friggin' nuts, as all the other barrels I have are interchangeable between receivers, etc. After the last one, I decided that unless I had a *very* good reason I will be sticking with a barrel-nut setup in the future.

Personally, I don't need the extra weight of a full diameter barrel shank - I have enough issues making weight for the sports I shoot in as is.

YMMV,

Monte

Very true. I dont need a totally straight taper. I was only looking for straight with the nut. Not sure what that boils down to.... 1''?
