Looked at a Savage 93 22LR today, had the thumbhole stock and a shark engraved into the wood, friggin awesome handling, anyone have any input on the savage rimfires?

Re: Savage Rimfire

They are fantastic.. Savage rimfires have great barrels and are tack drivers for an inexpensive price... Just try to get one with the acu-trigger, the old style trigger sucks (It's like 15lb pull thru a box of rocks). I used to own an older one but sold it for a newer one with an acutrigger. Another consideration is a CZ 452 but you will pay more money and it still does not have as good of trigger as an acutrigger on a Savage........SmokeRolls

Re: Savage Rimfire

I have 2 - a 93 in 22mag and a Mk II in 22lr, both with heavy barrel and accutrigger

The 22 mag with a flexible plastic stock (FV model) gives me consistient 1" groups at 100 yards. The stock isn't really set up for scope use - the comb is too low. So I've gotten the Boyds thumbhole stock to convert it to BTV format, but I'm poor so I've not gotten the new bottom metal I need.

My Mk II came in BTV format. With CCI Blazer ammo, the one time I had it out at the range I was getting good groups at 25 and 50, so I decided to go for 100 yards. Windy day, shifting winds, blustery. Kept on shooting, same bull. Ended up with a 25 shot 2" group at 100 yards. The white square in the middle is 1"x1".

I think that to get an equal you'll have to spend 2x the money... money I'd rather spend on glass and ammo.

Note that if you are having problems deciding on caliber, they are inexpensive enough to have several

Also, there are a couple of posts on rimfirecentral.com about modifying them to take Ruger 10/22 or 77/22 barrels...

Re: Savage Rimfire

I have a MKII FSS (Synth. stock, stainless sporter barrel) and get good groups at 50 yds. with aperture sights. My eyes aren't up to the task for peep-sights anymore so I'm going to trade up to a BTVS in .22WMR. The shoulder and cheek fit are perfect w/ scope.

Had toyed with smallbore competition but just don't have the time to devote, so might as well get a bit more useful round. We live at the suburban edge of farm country & woods and actually have a coyote problem. Not much longer...

Re: Savage Rimfire

I have a MKII in .22lr that got the MAKO shark it was a special run for TALO DISTRIBUTORS INC., This maybe a special run of somekind. My MKII shoots great and I love the stock black gray lamiant. It has shark fin cutouts to lightin it up a bit and shark fins under the barrel to help cooling.

Re: Savage Rimfire

just a tip on buying a stock for them there are three action models the mk2 22lr/17hm2 ,93r22 22wmr or 93r17 17hmr and the new e model reciver which now chambers all calibers in the same action just a different barrel. the mk2s and 93rs will use the same stocks the e action will not without mods to the stock.
btw i have a 93r22wmr non accutrigger with a customized ruger 77/22 clarke cromo barrel and a rifle basics sear bedded into a 93r17 bv stock shoots 1" at 100 yards with no problems.
just pick one up and enjoy it i've had mine 12 years

Re: Savage Rimfire

3 receiver types actually - Mk II non-e, 93 non-e and E (both Mk II and 93)

You can put a non-e gun into an E stock with just a little extra sanding, about the first 3 inches of the barrel.

Depending on what model and stock type you are starting with, you may need new bottom metal from Savage - $40 for "everything".

There is a good thread on rimfirecentral with pics that show E vs Non-E and non-e Mk II vs non-e 93

Edit - on top of this, the accutrigger vs non-accutrigger issue. But I think that unless you are buying a much older used one, the only way to get a non-accutrigger now is by buying from WalMart

Re: Savage Rimfire

I have been debating between a Savage and a CZ. I know the silhouette crowd really likes the CZ, partly because the varmint model with its tapered barrel meets a certain classification. I will not likely shoot sihouette, but am looking for better than average accuracy.
Looking at last years Snipers Hide internet match scores, a couple of the Savages are right on the heels of Carter's 40X. I only found one score for a CZ, so I am still undecided, but leaning to the Savage...
