So it looks to me like SB figured another $1000 was fair for the 1-8x24 PMII? Were they going to sell too many, I'm guessing?

Example a 1-4x, or 1.5-6x, or even a 2-8x all have a 4x ratio from low to high. A 5-25x has a 5x ratio from low to high. This is pretty standard in most scopes out there.
When you go to an 8x ratio from low to high power things get more complicated. Whether its a 1-8x, 2-16x etc. I cant go into how to build an 8x erector properly. You seem smart enough that if you understand what I mean from an engineering perspective about the ratio being greater from low to high power, you should see why it gets pricey. </div></div>
My guess is as time goes on costs on these will eventually come down.
