So it looks to me like SB figured another $1000 was fair for the 1-8x24 PMII? Were they going to sell too many, I'm guessing?

If they have a fixed supply, and demand is too high, then the best way to decrease demand is to raise prices. Sucks for us, good for them.

It turned out to be a much more costly endeavor than they realized - apparently the cost of manufacturing is much more than their high mag range scopes. All the highend 1-8 makers have priced their scopes at $3.5 - $4k.

US Optics 1-8 is coming in at low to mid 2k with all the options. Definitely an interesting choice.

That will make it interesting for Leupold with their new Mk6 1-6x20, which is priced at $1900.
What reticle(s) are USO offering, and also, the standard must ask question, is the reticle dot Aimpoint bright for daylight use?

I lost interest in the S&B when the price went up to $3,500.
I just read the thread on the USO 1-8x and I am looking forward to seeing it. It'll be a big seller if it comes in at $2,450. I'll be looking for two of them. Go USO!

Did they price it there because they had to, or because they could? And if they had to....why. I'd love to have some manufacturer come on here and shut me the hell up by telling me what in a 1-8 costs $2000 more than a 1-4.

The difference is in the Erector. Most scopes out there have a 4x or 5x ratio from low to high power. Example a 1-4x, or 1.5-6x, or even a 2-8x all have a 4x ratio from low to high. A 5-25x has a 5x ratio from low to high. This is pretty standard in most scopes out there.
When you go to an 8x ratio from low to high power things get more complicated. Whether its a 1-8x, 2-16x etc. I cant go into how to build an 8x erector properly. You seem smart enough that if you understand what I mean from an engineering perspective about the ratio being greater from low to high power, you should see why it gets pricey.

If anyone here is into cameras, you will find the same thing on lenses from Nikon and Canon. One of the factors in the price is the magnification range. The larger the range, usually the higher the price. A basic 18-55 lens can be had for $100. An 18-105 lens can be had for $300. An 18-200 lens is $700.
I am not an engineer, but I know that when you are working over larger magnification ranges, keeping everything clear throughout the entire range is much more difficult.
