I recently saw a MK clone but with a SBR upper and noticed the owner had covered up his engravings as required by the NFA with a QR code. Are QR codes something new and the ATF handbook (chapters 6/7) haven't been updated? Per the ATF this engraving has to be "wholly unobstructed from plain view".

You said he has a QR code on the upper. For AR style weapon, the lower must contain the NFA marking, and the marking is specified in terms of size and letters and content, so a QR code will not work. As @loveha mentioned, many are not adopting more conspicuous locations. We recommend that for military correct lowers, like a Colt or LMT, where you dont want to take away from the name brand. Under the trigger well is a great place.
