So we got cans legalized a few years back here in WA. We already had AOW's and DD's. Yesterday I was in the gun shop to get some 9mm +P+ ammo, and overheard one guy behind the counter mention to another that SBR's were likely about to become legal, that it was waiting on the governor's signature and then they'd be legal 90 days later. Does anyone know if this is true? I've looked it up online and I found a bill like this clearing our senate, but is it or has it been/about to be signed?

Thanks for any info anyone may have. Sure would be nice to have SBR's here, to not have to go through bullshit like long FF tubes or integral builds or blind pinned 14.5's if you want a short barrel suppressed.

I'm not in WA but from what I understand it was overwhelmingly passed by the senate and was simply awaiting the signature of the governor and if he doesn't sign within 90 days then it automatically becomes law anyways. Looks like you guys will have SBR's in no time, congrats!

Oh man! I hope that's how it works! Thanks!

We've been on a roll here the last decade or so, legalizing pretty much anything that doesn't affect your neighbor or his/her rights, as it were. I'll leave it at that.

I figured SBR's would follow suppressors, because not having them is a stupid law anyway, and it instantly caused problems with nearly all suppressor owners (which went from like maybe 5 to 5000 in no time flat once the suppressor law passed) but I had no idea when SBR's would be okay'd, or even if. So yesterday was a pleasant surprise, and if you're right, if it becomes law automatically, then even better. But I'll make sure to call his office and ask him to go ahead and sign it now!

I'm mostly stoked about this law because it's gonna save me money more than anything else. Instead of an integral .300BLK, I can register a couple of lowers and use existing cans. Awesome!

I think my wife will like it too. She's not into firearms all that much, but for some reason she really digs NFA shit. Go figure.

It certainly sounds like this is going to happen. It's all the buzz on our local firearm forums, check out

There's a few threads with lots of people discussing this right now.

Good for WA. Women always dig the most expensive stuff. LOL.

Yeah, right? She complains about me, but she just got her Liberty Essence E-filed recently, and wants me to build her a Volquartsen Mk2/3 to use with it.

Told her about this SBR deal and she grinned when she heard the word "P90". She's mentioned she wanted one of these suppressed before, and now she can get one with the regular barrel and not the 16" monstrosity. At least cans for it are fairly inexpensive, comparatively. But hey, if she digs it...

Buy or build... Easy, I already know what I want. A short .300BLK AR, it still works well with a short barrel whereas most rifle cartridges just don't. Only now I won't have to make it an integral build. I can go ahead and get that other can I wanted and just get a short upper or put one together. After paying the taxes to register the receivers I want to use, of course.

I wonder if anyone knows if this includes shotguns in this state? SBS? Are those gonna be legal too, or just the rifles?

So update, it looks like it was VERY overwhelmingly passed like was said... What, unanimous in one house, almost so in the other? So it's just a matter of time now. Just wait, fill out the forms, do it right and I'll have it (them, plan on registering a few). Been waiting long enough already, another few months won't kill me, so it's just a wait game now. No biggie. Had to wait years on cans here.

I doubt inslee will sign it, even though it was a near unanimous vote! We probably will be waiting till june. But..... Hell yeah! June isn't very far! We are very fortunate to have forward thinking politicians and a very strong lobby here. Thanks to all that worked and lobbied for this. Form 1 here we go!

There's an issue regarding the language of the bill and how the word "manufacture" was left out so it could affect building your own.

Yeah, well, if I can't use receivers I already have I'll just buy new ones and have those registered as SBR lowers from the start. Then I wouldn't be building my own, I'd be buying an already registered SBR. That's how they look at pistols already, if you buy a lower you can't re-register it as a pistol, you have to buy a whole new lower and register it as a pistol from the start.

I'm hoping it works out like this at least. Now I haven't read the law, but the way I understand WA law works in general is that if it's in there, it's law, and if it isn't covered, it isn't law. So I don't see why you couldn't register an already owned lower, but we'll find out here soon enough. I'll go ahead and call my NFA lawyer on Monday or Tuesday and ask him what I need to do.

That's another great reason to get your trust through an NFA attorney. They'll answer and/or research all of your questions. Having a good local dealer who knows his shit is great too.

I plan on registering a few AR lowers ASAP, existing or new ones, so I'll get back on here with what's involved as soon as I know, unless someone else finds out first. I won't know until I talk to my lawyer.

That would kind of suck. Any forums/threads on the WA sites where this is being discussed?
