• Watch Out for Scammers!

We've now added a color code for all accounts. Orange accounts are new members, Blue are full members, and Green are Supporters. If you get a message about a sale from an orange account, make sure you pay attention before sending any money!

Feedback Scammers 'erywhere!

Something popular on the knife facebook groups is for the seller to send you a video of the item showing all sides and also have both names written on a peice of paper also part of the video

He hasn’t sent me anything directly and when I search his user name I get the “oops this user controls who views their account” message.

Maybe ask the buyer to report what was sent to them, and then you can follow-up by reaching out to a staff member to confirm it wasn't you?

Further back in the thread, someone mentioned the report button helped because it captures the scammer's IP address, which can then be blocked. Otherwise, they can just keep changing usernames when one gets deleted.

Ohh that’s pretty cool. The buyer said he flagged him. I was just trying to also do the same so he didn’t F anyone and I get the blame.

So here is a suggestion I've been telling folks for a couple years now.

INSIST on a video chat and look at the item, buyer and the seller and talk about all the payment details in the video chat.

That is way harder at this point for anyone to fake
(Give it 10 years and well it won't be).

If they can post on the internet, they CAN do a video chat, every cut rate phone, laptop and tablet has a camera these days.

I only ever had 1 probably legit person be a pain about it and refuse to do a video chat, so I just walked away from the deal.

All this Send me a picture with xxx isn't nearly as good as just insist on a video call regardless of if you are the buyer or seller.

Oh for sure.

Looks like the site staff might already be on it. Clicking on that username, looks like it's been banned.

I did a little bit of stuff to counteract stuff like this elsewhere, but it’s always a race and enough effort on their part will eventually get them an account to post shit from. Highly recommend strong passwords on your accounts and yes a video chat or minimum a custom particular photo of the item (e.g. take a photo of the item with a AA battery and a piece of paper in the frame with some particular word written on it) is a fantastic idea. It sounds PITA and goofy, but nobody here wants to lose $XXXX(X?) over not writing “happy new year” on a piece of paper and taking a phone pic.. There’s only so much PII you can reasonably ask someone to verify their initial account too, which is a challenge for the forum and a decent balance has already been struck and experimented with.

Yep, I should have read this first. Just posted an I'll take it & got Pm's from an unknown 1 post member. I did report. But the transaction went down hill after that.

Hell, I came back here & noticed a second attempt from another scammer. What a mess.

Neat!

I'd pay $5 to scam you out of $1500
Would also make a lot more work for a handful of people with very little upside.

Free bump! TTT
They’d have to make a new account every time they change their username I don’t think it’s a horrible idea. It would be a deterrent long term if people were savvy to the scam.

I'm pretty sure fools running these scam games are using a VPN based floating ip so blocking that will likely be useless.

Guys, unless one is commenting as an IT specialist, of which we do have many here, then I'm pretty sure Frank knows more than us, as he's hired IT specialists to advise him.

More scammers! I just posted "PM sent" to an ad here, and was sent this message. Just a heads-up to anyone else if you see this. Another trick to try and intercept the sale.

Or post I’ll take it, and immediately PM the actual seller, don’t wait on them to PM.
Then when you get the fakes sending you messages, report their ass.

This is a portion of the steps you should take to reduce the chances of being scammed.

That's what I did, and I still got the above response as soon as I tagged the public thread.

Yeah, but if your PM content isn't included as part of the PM from the seller, Boom! you got them.

The PM protection has two parts, and you are responsible for both. You have to PM them, and it's also your responsibility to check the incoming PM for whatever you wrote to them.

True, but it's just annoying that there's so many of them on here now, you can't even post "PM sent" without them trying to rip you off.

I had this exact response to PM on an ad. I emailed and got someone into a conversation about buying the gun. What I’m not clear about is the person I was emailing said they marked the item as sold and it did get marked that way so either the original poster was in on it or ?? I searched that email address and it came up as associated with scams on other sites as well.

Snipers hide has unfortunately became grossly infested with scammers. I got scammed for $40 here….thankfully it wasn’t for much more.
God help you if you post a WTB thread. It’s just insane how many scamming predators are in our midsts….🤦‍♂️

Frank posted a couple years back that WTB ads were essentially a giant beacon to scammers and they should not be used.

I stopped making deals with people who do not have “supporter”, “full member” icons and questionable low post count etc.

Both guys refused goods & Services even with me covering the fees. wouldn't share feedback from other sites. The thing that tipped me off... From the conversation page hen I clicked on their profile it showed limited messages and 0 feedback. If I went to the listing and clicked on it, it showed a complete profile. Thankfully I searched "scammer" and found this.

You know that meme where some bull squirrel is hanging by his balls from a fence and your day should be better?
Yeah.
If we could somehow find a way to post scammers in such a situation....

I have been asking for pics of the merchandise in particular positions along with human interaction. I did get scammed once. I learned.

These fuckers are everywhere, cloning user names/profiles........been happening daily on here anymore. Something needs to change. New accounts shouldn't be able to send messages or use PX for first 30 days, and have at least a 50 post minimum.

You must be kind of new here. Both of those methods have been tried here over the many years and found to be ineffective.

I guess, bout 6 years. Lost my old profile due to scammers. It's very prevalent right now. These ass holes must be cloning 100s of profiles. Has to be a way to deter them.
