So, I am potentially coming into some money in the next month and I am going to buy myself something nice. I currently own a Bushnell Elite 3200 5-15x50 this one and I admit thats the most I ever spent on an optic. I previously have owned a Leupold 3-9x40 tactical similar to this as well as various other low end optics.

If I were to replace my current Bushnell with something better, here is what I would like to have.
<ul style="list-style-type: disc">[*]Exposed target knobs [*]Higher magnification (around 20x) [*]Great glass [*]Target dot reticle [*]1/4 in click value [*]Prefer 50mm+ objective lense
This scope will be mounted on a .308 Win and will not be used in a tactical situation, nor will my life ever depend on it (at least not in any scenario I've ever imagined.) Usage of this scope will be as follows. <ul style="list-style-type: disc">[*]100 and 200 yard target shooting --- 90% of the time [*]Long range hog hunting [*]Possibly 600y F-class in the future
So, what am I missing out on, guys? You almost never hear a complaint on NF optics and I like that they hold their value over time. Also, I hear that IOR's have excellent glass. I have also heard good things about the Sightron SIII. I am not really interested in Vortex (personal preference.) I think USO, S&B, Premier are out of my league, so lets keep this discussion to about a $1500 budget. That said, what are the features I should be looking for and what don't I need. mil/mil, ffp, moa/moa, zero stop, Bertrillium-Zantitium (joking.) Like I said, school me, I want to learn.

Some scopes that have caught my eye.
<ul style="list-style-type: disc">[*] IOR 10x56
Wow, this looks amazing and its definately in my price range. Not sure if 10x is enough, but I don't know if better glass means I can live with less magnification. I'm not hard set on variable vs fixed power either. My current scope pretty much stays at 15x although there is a slight loss of clarity over its 10x setting, but I think its easy to shoot target at higher magnification.
[*] Sightron SIII 6-24
This fills nearly all my criteria, not sure about the click values. I have heard the the dot reticle may be a bit large?
[*] Nightforce 5.5-22x50
Starting to get a little pricey but it so customizable.
[*] USO ST-10
For only $950 and this good of a scope I could live with 10x.
So, lets hear it. I took my time to explain myself and attempted not to make this a noob post in the hopes that I will get some good feedback.

Re: School me on high end optics

alot on here do not like Leupold but don't leave the Leupold ER/T 6.5-22x50 off your list to check out. They have the M5 turrets that are mil/mil now. Comes in at $1699. I am in the same boat as you now and these are the things I want in a scope:

FFP
mil/mil
would like 20x max but am considering 15x
great warranty in case it is needed
tough
clear glass

So far, these are the models I am looking at:

Leupold ER/T with M5 turrets 6.5-20x50 $1699 (mil/mil, FFP, 20x, no illumination, clear glass, mildot or TMR reticles, excellent warranty)

NightForce F1 3.5-15x50 $2290 (tough as nails, mil/mil, FFP, good glass, illuminated, mildot or MLR reticle, excellent warranty)

Vortex Razor HD 5-20x50 $1999 (not sure, excellent warranty)

Like I said, from reading a ton of stuff on here, alot of people do not like Leupold. The most noted reason is b/c they have been a little behind in adding upgrades to their scope line-up but have been staying at the higher price range. the Leupold I have listed has everything the others do except for the illuminated reticle. The Nightforce sounds great but I keep asking myself if I want to pay $600 more for illuminated reticle. The Razor has everything but is a new scope on its first run...unproven. I have not made a choice yet and I am flipping back and forth every day.

Re: School me on high end optics

I have the NF and SIII that you listed. Of all the ones that you listed, I would definitely go with the NF NXS first. The reticles are great and the magnification and adjustment range is ideal for what you are looking to do. The Sightron is a good scope also. It has good glass. The target dot reticle is about 1/4 MOA. I have thought several times about having the reticle changed to maybe a 1/8 MOA. Sightron has someone that they recommend to do this if you want to change it.

Re: School me on high end optics

Out of the ones you listed I would probably only go for the Nightforce, As I am currently saving for one myself. Like someone on the hide always said "cry once, buy once", I think thats how it goes...

Re: School me on high end optics

You said this "Possibly 600y F-class in the future" if it were me I'd bypass 10x power scopes and go for the nightforce more power and you don't have a real need for an FFP scope either.

LOL. I don't care who you are, that's funny right there.

Re: School me on high end optics

Not when you line up on a bear at 300 yds and the Leupy goes tits up (happened to me). At least i didn't think it was funny at the time.

You have a Bushnell. Have you considered the 6-24x 4200 Tactical model? Mildot reticle and plenty of Magnification for 600yd F-class. The Sightron would be a good choice too. I would say go NF if matching the reticle to the turrets (i.e. moa/moa) is important to you (it is to me). The other two scopes are solid enough. Of course NF and USO are great choices if you have the funds. I like USO for the custom choices, i'm picky.
