I'm a 308 and 338 edge shooter, but I have come to realize that for inside 1200 yds(I think) something in the optimized 6mm family or .260 family would work best.

I probably won't be using it for hunting, at least not much. Long distance precision is the idea.

So...tell me the up and coming round. I want one that will have factory ammo and easily available brass. I would rather not have to do fire forming, etc when reloading. Just buy it, load it and shoot. What are the advantages and disadvantages of the different ones such as 6.5 Creedmore .260(?) etc?

    Thanks for your help guys!

Might have just answered my own question with this write up by our very own Zak Smith of TBAC! Thanks Zak, very interesting read. It was you guys tearing it up at the Steel Challenge with these types of rounds that really drew my attention. I hope to shoot in some of those next year!

For less than 1200 yards, I would suggested building a gun around the 6.5 130gr Berger VLD or JLK. Lots of speed and a really good BC. Bryan Litz has shown that the 6.5 142gr bullet has the same ballistic performace at a 220 308 round, without all that recoil.

I'd recommend the Creed. Great factory ammo available.

I'd stay away from the 6mm's IF you'll actually be shooting out to 1200. I find the lack of energy at those distances make it difficult to spot your misses unless conditions are perfect.

The 6.5's with 130's or 142's work great out there.

The 6mm Dasher is the round to beat in the 1000 yard right now. 3000 with a
107 grain will get you to 1200. Holds a lot of the records at present.

Thank you for your replies everyone. Since I already have a 308, I'm thinking a .260 might be a good way to go. Why? Similar ballistics to the creedmore, and with a .308 parent case, lots of brass available to neck up or down.(243, 7mm08, and 308 of course.)

Now, just have to win the lottery so I can get all the extras for this build right?
