F T/R Competition scope base and rings for f t/r

i am waiting on a savage 308 I am planning on using this year for f t/r. I am going to use a nightforce 12 - 42x 56 with the sunshade. I am planning on using a sinclair mirage shield with this setup, or at least be able too.

my questions are.

1. what minute of angle base will be suitable to use this rifle for match ranges from 300 to 1000 yards. i am concerned about the 40 moa internal adjustment. I would really like to be able to run this scope from 100 to 1000 yards, and dial the turrets for zero's on each. Im concerned about any problems with running this scope on the extreme edges of the adjustments, but would rather do that at 100 yards vs. 1000.

2. what height of rings are necessary to run this scope with the sunshade and the mirage shield.

the specifice model is savage model 12 bvss. im not sure of what this barrel countour is but it looks similar to a remington varmint countour.

I may upgrade to a longer heavier barrel if the factory barrel doesn't work out.

Im planning on running 175 berger or smk's at fairly fast speeds, but i dont have any specifics on the ballistics i will be able to get out of this rifle.

This is a drawing of my Savage 12 F/TR with a Farrell 20 moa base and high rings that I made so I could order the right rings. The scope is a Sightron 8-32x56.

FYI the contour dimensions are not as precise as the stated dimension. I'd only trust it to two decimals.

The base you need is an unknown until you get the rifle and the scope put together, though a 20moa works for most people. I started with a 20 MOA base and found that I didn't have the elevation to get to 1000. I put on a 30 and everything is good.

This is a target rifle and a 308, you don't need combat tested strength. I'm running aluminum in my new build to save weight.

For your purposes I'd get an EGW aluminum 20MOA base, it may get you to 1000, if it doesn't you're only out $30 or so and you can get a 30, and in the mean time you can shoot it at 100 doing load development.

On my current rifle I'm running a Badger 30MOA rail and medium rings with a 32BR.

Some other thoughts.

You are going to do load development, most of that will probably be at 100 to 300 yds (so you can see your hits) It's nice to have a scope setup that will let you work there and not just at 600 to 1000. Assuming your 12-42 is an NXS and not a BR it has 45 MOA of adjustment. If you are shooting heavies (175+) it will take you about 36MOA to get to 1000 from a 100 yd zero, 155s get there with closer to 30 MOA so with 45 MOA to work with you really need to be close to the bottom to get a 100 yd zero and still have the elevation to get to 1000yds.

Not all scoped have the erector centered in the same place, and not all barrels are indexed on the action get the same poi in relation to the plane of the top of the action, so until you shoot it you won't know exactly where in the scopes adjustment range you are working. I'd definitely want some buffer between the top of the range and my 1000 yd dope so the perfect setup will get you a 100 yd zero 4moa from the bottom and 1000 at 5moa from the top.

XTR, very well put, the NXS 12-42x56 also has limited travel, I ended up going with a 28moa base from Cameron Murphy to get me to 1000 yards.
