I have researched this for a while. I like for my scopes to fit tight. Not to tight as to damage them. I know close but not to close. But can anyone give me a minimum measurement for bell clearance on a .308.

mostly...i need several rat hairs of distance between the boolit tube and the countersniper scope bell.....ya got to remember to wick away that pesky mirage......

thanks rthur. Thats more like what I'm looking for. I'm well under 1/8 with low rings and just over 1/8 with med. I think I'm gona go med. just to be safe

dude really, as close as you can get without touching. if you can get a few cards, a few dollars, a coin even between the two. just as long as its not touching. most rings arent going to come in such fine increments that you will have to worry this much. it will either touch and not work or it will clear. i used a stack of pennies on my rail to set the scope on and see how close i could get. then the brand of rings i used came in 0.25" increments. 0.25", 0.50", 0.75" and 1.00" there are others with finer graduations. but with the choice of 0.25" and 0.50" it was 0.25" and i have about an 1/8" inch with a flip up. i didnt bother to see how much closer it would go with any other brand of rings.
and i was serious about the cards.

I like to have enough room to prevent interference with my scope covers as well as an oiled patch in there, 1/8" is plenty. Keep in mind when ordering rings that different manufacturers have different ideas of what "low" means.
I find in general for 1" tubes mediums work and 30mm is low.

Why do you like the scope low?
Mount the scope as high or low to match the position of your eyeball, don't freak out about how it looks.
To anwser the question though, if it needs to be low, make sure there is enough room to get an even coverage of Krylon on the barrel and the scope...otherwise it is definitely NOT snipery.
