Re: scope for 338LM that can do 1000yd around $1000

People are still telling folks to buy the Vortex PST.
While I am sure that they will be an excellent value and a very good product, as of now, THEY DO NOT EXIST!!!
Now, Vortex does have a 6.5-20 SFP mil-dot scope that gets excellent reviews and can be had for about 500 bucks.

I do not know how much adjustment is available.
I know bushnells have excellent glass but are lacking on adjustment. The Luepy is overpriced for what you get and the Nikon is a bit limited on adjustment also.

I suggest either the Vortex Standard Viper 6.5-20x50mm, the Weaver Tactical 4-20 or possibly the Burris XTR tactical series.

+1 on the SS 10X

It's got a great price and the scope has held up for several outings on this one of mine. It works fine out to 1000+ yards. Leaves a lot of money for the ammo and works while you save for a top-end optic if you decide to go that route later on.

The only con I can see with the scope is that it has a dumb as shit name.

Re: scope for 338LM that can do 1000yd around $1000

Another suggestion: Look for a used Nightforce in the for sale section. Maybe a bit more than $1000, but will stand up to the .338.

Re: scope for 338LM that can do 1000yd around $1000

I recently purchased a sightron SIII 6-24X50 and it is extremely nice. It has 100 MOA of adjustment, target turrets (under the caps), mil dot reticle, and 1/4 MOA adjustments. Scott at Liberty optics made me a great deal. I was at the range recently with a buddy and we hand wrote some load data on the targets. Through his Bushnell 6500 elite you could not even see that there was writing on the target at 24x at 100 yards, and through mine I could read the words. They are impressive scopes for the cost.

Re: scope for 338LM that can do 1000yd around $1000

For 1K, you can find a Leupold Mk IV around there if you look hard. Or you can look in the for sale section, and may be able to get a used one for a little more than that. If 1K is the absolute ceiling, then the SS scope is graded for 50 BMG so it should stand up to the 338LM easily. The Vortex Viper is also a good scope (I have it on my 243)for the price. Don't know how it does with the 338LM though

You can't argue logically with the Kool aid drinkers.

Back to the original question, look at the IOR scopes. Several great choices, great service, and the IOR scopes actually exist in the real world.

Very important that you consider how much internal adjustment the scope has and those that I have listed here should all serve you well the list is by no means all inclusive but I feel confident that you will be happy with any of these. The Super Sniper 10x42 HD is the only one that is 1/10 mil clicks the others are 1/4 moa clicks but the two fixed power Sightrons 16x and 20x have 150 moa of internal adjustment where the variable 6-24x50 has 100 moa of internal adjustment. All of these scopes have very nice glass and are very reliable. The Super Sniper has about 120 moa of internal adjustment and is actually one of a limited number which were added onto a military order.

Re: scope for 338LM that can do 1000yd around $1000

i have never look at Bushnell as a high end scope. i was a die hard Nikon guy growing up and a Leupold guy when the budget allowed.

as for sigton i don't know enough about it.

i wish i could get a night force or a Leupold in that price range. in that 24X in my price rang how ever there is a Leupold mark 3 for around that 1k

i really like the nikon on the chopping block just don't know how the redical will work out for me its that BDC

Re: scope for 338LM that can do 1000yd around $1000

Its great glass not a tactical one though mostly for old bench rest old guys. Only 60 MOA of Adjustment and you need med or high rings or larger depending on mount. I like using straight power scopes (cheaper than FFP) Sightron make a SIII 16x42 tactical with 150 MOA adjustment I have seen guys shoot a 18 inch plate at 1600 yards with one(shooting .308 rl-17 and 208 amax). Libertyoptics sells them 549 shipped. Or a Supersniper which has 125 MOA of Adjustment either one should get you out to 1500 yards or higher and both handle the .338 lapua then saves you some money until you can get a nightforce or an USO. Don't get the 20 power of either because your exit pupil on a 40-42mm objective is way to small to let in enough light. If you think it is not enough power we use the mark 4 4.5-14(standard issue on the M82A1)on the M82A1 and we have to qualify at 1200 meters with it. You are typically going to need 45-55 MOA elevation adjustment to get to 1500 with a .338

and the upper bench was $1000.

so lets not compare apples and pineapples......

Sightron I can not speak about nor IOR

Had a NF F-1....good scope
Have a USO......Great scope

again....$1000...

Re: scope for 338LM that can do 1000yd around $1000

well guys i like were you all are coming from. Good advice i have a Leupold 20 moa slop base on order. Theirs no need to talk me into a Leopold, NF or a USO. I am a little leary about the sightron as i am just unfromiliar with them. but it shounds like some very qualified people above voche for them so there an option.

What do you guys know is the key player in making the low light shot is it the bell size, glass, modle or brand ?

Out of the scopes we talked about which one would make that make that low light shot ok. also i have herd good and bad things about having lots of magnification whats your opinion?

Re: scope for 338LM that can do 1000yd around $1000

I would NOT put a Bushnell on a 338. I shot a Stiller/Krieger 338LM this weekend that had a Bushnell on it. It would not hold zero. The guy who owned the rifle spent about $4k on the build but got cheap on the scope.

Re: scope for 338LM that can do 1000yd around $1000

I here you man, you think the Sightron would hold up?

FYI i am in the dealings for a NF or a Leupold mark 4 i have 2 guys considering my offers.

i will post pics of the nasty 338LM tonight i just cut the bolt and put the badger ord tactical knob on

any one out there have used scope for around $1000 PM me i cant put adds in WTS or WTB since i am new to the forum.

Re: scope for 338LM that can do 1000yd around $1000

I don't think it would have any issues holding up to an .338 the muzzle break takes most of the recoil out anyways. Scopes are funny we fired 1000s of rounds through our .50 cal with Mark 4 mounted on top never had an issue, also was banged around in the truck dropped, 180 Degrees heat, you name it the mark 4 never lost its zero. However I have heard of people buying a brand new mark 4 and to find out it had a canted reticle so with scopes they are just weird like that. I have never had an issue with any fixed power scope from any manufacture, also just because it is fixed doesn't mean that there are no moving parts.
