Rifle Scopes Scope for a 5r.

I've been shooting/reloading for some time, but its always been with hunting or varmint rounds (.223, .22-250, .270). Yesterday I bought my first .308, and heres my planned setup thats progressed in a month.

At first I was going to get a 700 SPS Varmint, switch the stock to an HS, and top it with a Bushnell 3200 10x.

Then I came across the Remington 5r. Had to have it. Called all around, and no one close had one, so Gunbroker it was.

Now that the rifle is taken care of, I'd like to sell off the HS that comes with it and bed the action in a McMillan. The $$ are adding up in my head....and I'm a tight ass. I should probably mention that.

The glass elevated slightly to a SS 10x or possibly the Millett TSR-1.

Now I'm not sure thats the best route. I don't want to do this rifle an injustice by putting crap on top of it, but at the same time my wallet has more or less ran off to hide.

Right now my ADHD train of thought is suggesting I pull a scope off another rifle and shoot it for a bit until:

A. I hear some actual user info about the Vortex PST
B. Keep watch on ebay for a good used Leupold
C. ?

I'm wanting what most people want. 30mm, mildot, .1mrad clicks, side focus, etc, and I'm getting to the point where I'll pay for it.

Any thoughts? My range at the house stretches to 550 yrds, so thats something to keep in mind.

Thanks for the help. After reading around for the past couple days, you guys seem to know what you're talking about.

Re: Scope for a 5r.

I forgot to mention one other thing. I work with a camera store that sells Nikon, so I can get their stuff @ cost. That might bring the Monarch X down to a level I could handle....until I change my mind anyway.

Re: Scope for a 5r.

Nothing relating to the glass but to the stocks. Are you planning later on to do a magazine conversion? Because if you do the math an adjustable McMillan is gonna cost you say $750. Add on the cost of $250-$400. If you look at McRee precision you get a fully adjustable stock that folds with a drop in magazine system. They go for around $750. Just a great option to consider.

Re: Scope for a 5r.

Just bought a 4th gen wotac 10x40. Had a bushnell 3200 10x. Honestly it fills out all of your requirement and has a great warranty. Mine is mil/mil, side focus, 30mm and a variation of the mp8 reticle (hash mil dot). Im in the process of working on a full writeup once I can get some range time with it.

Re: Scope for a 5r.

Unless you really want a different stock config, I'd put the money into better optics than you've mentioned. Well, the PSTs should be just fine. But a 5R in an H-S stock shoots just fine. I considered the Vortex Razor, NF F1 and Premier 3-15 and ended up with the Premier. It's a great combination.

Re: Scope for a 5r.

It looks like I can get a pretty good deal on the Monarch X scopes. I'd like to have the mil/mil though. I think I'm going to end up scrapping the stock idea for a bit and putting more in the glass. I have little experience with high end optics. What makes the NF so much better than a Leupold or Monarch?

thanks again

Nightforce has a lot of features people want. If youre not a gadget guy you can get a plainer optioned scope with better glass.
