Scope mount Questions?

Iam a newb so please bear with me. I have a rem 700 sps aac-sd and currently running an aluminum weaver one piece picatinny base with the rings that came with my cheapy bsa tactical weapon 3-16x44 scope. I have just aquired a nikon 4-12x40 bdc scope and was looking to upgrade my base and rings as well. I am looking at a badger steel 1 piece picatinny base and burris extreme tactical rings. My question is, the badger bases on midwayusa have options such as 20 moa elevated, what does this mean? Also what height rings would I need? Should I keep the Base that I have now and just Buy Rings? Any advise is appreciated thanks.

"Normally, your scope would be zeroed in (if bases and rings are machined and fitted true and level) close to the center of the range of your scope adjustment...so you can dial "up" for only about half the whole range of your scope, if needed, to compensate for your drops.


What the 20 MOA base does is tilt your scope. Now you have to re-adjust your scope "down" so you are lined up with your zero point. You "new" starting point for zero is now in the lower half of your scope adjustment "down" ~20 MOA, so you now have that 20MOA and the rest of the other half of the range of your scope adjustment to "dial up" for your drops."

Personally unless you need the 20MOA to be able to dial for the range you plan to shoot at I'd save the money and keep what you have. A chunk of steel won't do anything a chunk of aluminum won't in reality when it comes to scope bases. If you have the expensive stuff you can brag about it I guess, and tout the virtue of it being stronger and not getting dinged when your scope's thin walled aluminum tube gets smashed down into it somehow. With any base, make sure it fits right, bed it if it doesn't, even the expensive ones can't match every individual mass produced receiver's profile, keep your rings and mounting screws torqued properly and you should be trouble free.
