when your mounting a scope which is the right way? 1. looking through the scope and eyeballing the reticle to make sure its straight? or to have it level and check it with a level, like the gun on a level surface guns level and the scope level? reason i'm asking this is because i did it with levels and with everything level the reticle looks off to me.

Re: scope mounting question (help)

I don't have a vice, so I mount my ring bottoms, level the rifle, insert & level scope, then mount ring tops. If I feel anything shifted at all, I recheck level on everything.

Couple questions...

- Were the ring bottoms secure to the base? Loose vs tightened rings can be at different angles
- Did you use 2 levels to even out left-right and front-back alignment?
- Did you tighten screws in X-pattern & monitor scope level thru the entire process? Just a little pressure on one side can cause it to cant
- Double check where you leveled the rifle. Are you sure you used a level are?
- Is it a tactical scope? You could loosen the rings, use the feeler gauge technique and see if the levels show you back in alignment. If your scope base it uneven to the rifle, this won't work too well.

An easy test you could do is:
- Pin & level a string on the wall across the room like 8" off the ground so you can see it through your scope
- Remove your scope
- Level the rifle
- Remount the scope
- Is the reticle in alignment with the string?

Right handed shooters seem to naturally cant their rifle to the left & think it's level. Does it look like your reticle is slightly canted left?
