I'm in the process of putting together a new custom sheep hunting rifle. I'm looking at a 7 lb finished rifle (without scope). My question is this? How well would the NF NXS 5.5-22x50 scope balance out with this gun. I realize it's a little more scope than whats needed for sheep hunting but I want this new build to be my #1 go to gun for all my hunting out west. For those who don't know, the NF weighs 31 ounces.

Re: scope/rifle balance

I was rolling with a 6-18 for a while and felt it was "too much" and changed to a 3.5-10 - and I now carry it at 4-6x mag all the time. carrying at 5.5 wont be a big deal. I shoot both eyes open anyway, so acquiring a target quickly at 5-6x isn't too big a deal unless it's closer than 20 yards anyway.

Re: scope/rifle balance

Thanks for the advice. I didn't think it would make that much difference. I really like some of the swaro's at 14-16 oz but I'd like a little more magnification and a larger objective than the lighter offerings.

Re: scope/rifle balance

to each their own , is there a reason you want a huge , heavy scope with turrets that stick out to get snagged , on a ultra light rifle ? i would look at a leupold , leica , s,b zeiss , etc, scope made for hunting . that has a low end in the 2.5-4 x range , and weighs much less then the nf.

Re: scope/rifle balance

You might also look at the March 2.5-25x42 SFP or new, not yet released 3-24x42 FFP scopes. In un-illuminated they're in a similar price range to the NF 5.5-22x56 and only weigh 22 oz.

I just preordered the 3-24x42 for my lightweight silhouette match/hunting rifle.
