I'm in the market for a scope for:

* AR-15 - haven't decided on cartridge
* Hunting and targets, 400 yards at most
* Daylight
* I'm fine with either FFP or SFP (probably prefer FFP)
* I'm fine with either Mil or MoA (probably prefer Mil)
* I don't think I care about tube size, objective size, weight
* If I can dial that would be great
* $500-ish limit (I'm fine spending more but let's use that as a starting point, please)

I understand that FFP may not fit with the rest of the points and that's fine if that's the case. The same with Mil. I only indicated FFP and Mil because I recently purchased my first scope with that setup and like it a lot. But that scope has a very different use and the budget was way more. All other scopes I have are SFP MoA. For example, I have a Leupold VX-2 3-9x40 from 10 years ago - it's a low end model but it works great for me.

Thank you for your suggestions.

Athlon Midas tac 4-16 would be a good option. FFP, MIL turrets and good reports on tracking. Can find them under $600 new and occasionally close to $500. Otherwise definitely can get one for less than $500 on the PX

If hunting is the primary use, maybe consider the Athlon Midas HMR 2-5x50 with the AHMR reticle. I put one on my primary hunting rifle.

SFP and MOA, but that's what I wanted for hunting. The turrets are capped and don't have a zero stop, but they are very tactile and not mushy at all. If I wanted to use it for target work I could remove the caps and feel comfortable spinning the turrets. (The feel just like the tactical turrets mechanically, just downsized to fit under the caps). Glass is very good, typical of the Athlon Midas line. Can be had for under 5 bills from @gr8fuldoug at CameralandNY.
