SCOUT Package from UGSW

For those of you looking for a custom SCOUT that's as close to the Colonel's stone tablets as possible, we're building the ("true") package under our WildCall Custom Rifles moniker. We're currently building them on the Remington 700 and Winchester (FN) Classic actions, but will soon offer them on our own Controlled Round Feed action. I usually have better pictures, but with all the snow outside, the better pictures will probably have to wait til Spring.

The package shown will be reserved for the WildCall Custom builds to cater to hunting duties, and we'll be finishing a "Dangerous Game SCOUT" pretty soon, but a more "Tactical" type platform will be built by Underground Skunkworks. The rifle pictured weighs in at just under seven pounds.

Is that a 1 piece bolt? And can you give some pics of the rear sight?

Cheers,

Thanks DM.

Yes, the bolt is one piece and the rear sight is made in-house.

At a minimum for the Dangerous Game SCOUT. We're also going to do the DG SCOUT in .458 Lott as well as other common DG chamberings.

Nice.

What prices can we expect?

Re: SCOUT Package from UGSW (WildCall Custom Rifles)

Now THAT is the ideal for a Scout Rifle setup and one in which I am sure the good Colonel would be proud to field.

+1 on the idea of a 375H&H (and possibly 416 Rigby or other "bigger bore"/dangerous game chambering like 458WM or Lott).

Re: SCOUT Package from UGSW (WildCall Custom Rifles)

I am not familiar with this type of setup. Would some one care to explain the role this plays? Is it used for big and dangerous game?

Re: SCOUT Package from UGSW (WildCall Custom Rifles)

I'm sorry I forgot that everyone on this forum was suppose to know everything

I was questioning the optic in that configuration and how it is beneficial for the weapons purpose because it seems eye relief would be a issue with certain optics.

The "scout rifle" requires you to use a "scout scope" if you are mounting an optic forward of the receiver. There are dedicated scout optics like the Leupold Scout/Intermediate Eye Relief (IER) pictured above which is a 2.5x (actual mag is around 2.2x). Burris (my preferred scout scope...nothing against the Leupy...it is a great scope as well) makes another in 2.75x. They are designed and purpose-built as scout scopes with eye relief specifically designed for that mounting position. The benefits are multi-faceted. My advice to you is to run a basic Google search on the scout rifle concept developed by Colonel Jeff Cooper (and his work in helping to develop the Steyr Scout rifle). That will give you all the background you need, along with a better description of the benefits of each component to the system.

dude, its not that. but you are ON the INTERNET. open another window or tab and google scout rifle. all the stuff kid glock said. do that and all your questions will be answered faster than waiting for a post from someone. any time i want to know something, an acronym, MOUT, SOCOM, PVS22 or anything. just google. you will get first hand info. not someone here regurgitating what he read or heard for you. its just faster.

skunkworks--great stuff from skunkworks as usual. do you guys just hole up and make one thing after another until your benches and racks are full and you have to start posting pictures to sell it off and make more space? or what man? lol, gun elves? nice rifle. again

Re: SCOUT Package from UGSW (WildCall Custom Rifles)

What is the difference / similarity between your scout rifle and Grizzly Custom Guns scout rifle?
Since your old address was the same as Grizzly Customs address?

MTM,
The SCOUT is a pretty deliberate design but has various uses/applications. As ORD mentioned, there's a lot of information on the concept available, but to sum it up, the SCOUT is designed to place hits on target very quickly from field expedient positions. It's puposely designed to be light, handy and practical and it's certainly not a bench (or static position) rifle.

We build our SCOUT to be as "pure" as possible to what Col. Cooper envisioned. The ideal chamber, according to Col. Cooper, doesn't include Dangerous Game cartridges, but we've taken a few liberties and presented the package to those that fancy hunting Dangerous Game.

The SCOUT pictured here is what I've used as my personal hunting rifle for at least two years. The optic required for the SCOUT has to meet the Intermediate Eye Relief (IER) criteria. As ORD mentioned, Leupold and Burris are the only two manufacturers that offer a SCOUT Scope. The IER is approximately nine inches, so a pistol scope (Extended Eye Relief, or EER) won't work.

Low magnification is important as the field of view should be quite wide. With a properly practiced shooter, the SCOUT is very effective. The accuracy of a SCOUT typically won't be what we'd expect from some of the other builds featured on SH (as far as small groups go), but it is capable of accuracy that is accessible via good shooting skills and knowing how to use those skills in the field.

I hope this helps....

The production of the SCOUT Packages and Lever Guns moved with Underground Skunkworks and are now manufactured under WildCall Custom Rifles. I'm not sure what the plans are with Grizzly to continue SCOUT and Lever Gun packages.

So the scout rifle project I have in the pipeline with Grizzly will move to your shop?

We're doing them now on the Dakota action and we've sourced an Express style synthetic stock.
