I have been struggling with the idea of selling some of my factory rifles that I have bought since I was old enough to start buying, to raise some money towards one custom rifle plus optics or, two custom rifles without optics. Have any of y'all considered this move, or followed through and glad/sorry you did? Thanks for any advice.

I think that it's a great idea. Have one truly nice rifle, and spend all your time shooting it rather than shooting an assortment of lesser quality rifles, and I think that you will find that it will make you a better shooter.

^^ THIS ^^

I have done this in the past (with rifles/pistols/shotguns/ammo/parts/etc.) and I have been pleased with my decisions. Now, be sure that you aren't getting rid of anything with even the slightest sentimental value (or other important "non-monetary" value) because you will kick yourself later.

I sold my first 22 that I got for Xmas when I was 10. When my kids started getting old enough to shoot I couldn't find a single shot youth 22 that wasn't a cricket. I was kicking myself for selling mine but luckily it was to a friend of my dads and he sold it back to me. You will regret it for one reason or another.

Re: sell several rifles for just one or two customs?

Keep the ones with nostalgic value to you, like your first 22 or shotgun.

Then sell your factory guns and get a good custom with the best glass you can afford. You'll be glad when you make the switch to a good custom with great glass.

Re: sell several rifles for just one or two customs?

I did that very thing this year I sold three savages I customized and purchased a Ai ae best thing I have done. It really took some coaching from a friend but after doing it again I am very pleased. I put a hensoldt on it , now that I all I want to shoot.

Re: sell several rifles for just one or two customs?

I have two sons, 3 and 5, and that's part of why I hate to part with any of my guns. Not that any of them will soon be collector items or any thing, just that I do already own them and could pass them down. On the other hand would they be just as happy with, at minimum, two custom rifles? Just thinking out loud. Trying to justify selling any of them. This could be hard, I've always said I wouldn't sell any of my rifles but, that was before I knew about "accurate" rifles. Thanks for the input guys.

Re: sell several rifles for just one or two customs?

I did.

Sold 4 or 5, a couple handguns, and now have, to me, almost everything I need in one rifle. Still have a few sentimental ones, and plan to pick up a few more quality rigs as time goes on.

I've definitely graduated to quality over quanity.

Re: sell several rifles for just one or two customs?

Keep your guns! I see them as investments and inheritance. I will admit I've sold an AR, Glock, and wheel gun lately to fund a custom, but I hate doing it!

If you are patient and can collect parts as you get your paychecks keep your guns. If you want it now, well, you may just have to sell some.

I won't sell another. If I ever do it's something that I can get ahold of very easily again. Keeping all my rifles I have a purpose for...

Re: sell several rifles for just one or two customs?

Guns are tools. Nothing more. I'll never sell my grandpas guns but not because they are guns. They were his and passed to me, so they mean something. I'd rather one quality rifle than 100 crappy factory guns.

Re: sell several rifles for just one or two customs?

I used to buy/ hold on to every rifle I could get my hands on...just liked them and enjoyed shooting all the different kinds. Now, I find I have several that I haven't shot in YEARS, they hold no sentimental value nor am I interested in them. Little by little I have/ will sell them to get ones more to my liking or types I will shoot more. So far no regrets....

Re: sell several rifles for just one or two customs?

Man, I hate selling my guns. Esp. the ones that aren't "registered". And yes, every firearm that passes thru an ffl holder is registered for 20 yrs via the ffl holders log book. Since the log books of the ffl holder can be accessed at anytime by the BATFE, voila REGISTRATION. Back to the point. Personally, I scrimp and save and wait to get my custom builds and quality glass, instead of selling my guns. But then I am patient. It is all about personal choices.

Re: sell several rifles for just one or two customs?

I don't think you can compare quality and quantity. You can have a quanity of quality items if you have the resources. But if you are on limited resources, I would opt for one high quality piece of gear that fits your needs and allows you to up your game, whatever that is. That being said, variety is the spice of life.

Re: sell several rifles for just one or two customs?

Unless they're family pieces, or really nice,I see nothing wrong with selling the crap and getting a couple nice ones, I've done it as bunch of times. Can't complain about what I've got out of the deal either, kinda handy when your uncle has a gun shop and you can swap guns for labor with the smith. Might want to keep a couple bolt guns to break down for actions though.

Re: sell several rifles for just one or two customs?

I cut the collection of "serial number bearing items" back to a select few number of rifles which I really enjoy using. I kept the sentimental value pieces and the rest of them went to fund quality rifles and quality glass.

Re: sell several rifles for just one or two customs?

I'm relatively new to the sport...
But to me, the bottom line is not how many "impressive names" I can list as to the components that make up the rifle.

What it all comes down to is whether the bullet goes where I expect it to, with predictable consistency, to the level of accuracy I expect.

Some guys are willing to spend thousands more to get an extra half inch of accuracy. For others, this isn't so important.

If the rifles shoot satisfactorily (whatever that means for you), then why sell them?

Re: sell several rifles for just one or two customs?

I have done exactly this. I have sold every gun that I didn't shoot that had zero sentimental value. I have acquired good quality glass with the money from those sales and built a custom rifle. It is what I wanted and maybe more.

Not once have thought about the guns I sold. I know which gun I am going to grab everytime now. Still got the "family" guns and a couple of mine that I want to pass down.

Best of luck in your decision.

Re: sell several rifles for just one or two customs?

I made a sell or two and have decided to true and rebarrel the 308 I use the most, that I know I will never sell. I started another thread here asking opinions on my idea. Thanks for the advice and opinions on this matter.

Re: sell several rifles for just one or two custom

OH GREAT Chiller, that's what I would do...just keep my brain scrambled. Lol.
I'll cross that bride if I eer get there. I've never looked at them because I know they are out of my league. But, thanks for the bump to see what the guys with customs would do.

Re: sell several rifles for just one or two customs?

I have done this over the last few years since I discovered precision rifles. I kept my first 22 and a couple others but sold everything else. I've had an aw and it shot great but it really wasn't my cup of tea. I am much more happy with my gap that I was able to have built just the way I wanted. I just shoot for fun and hunting so all the stuff that makes the aw great don't really help me. If I were going to war I might change my tune a bit and reach for the aw just for the extra piece of mind
