New guy to reloading.....

I have been working up loads for my
Rem 700 Sendero 300 Ultra Mag.
So i am wondering if anyone can give me a little feedback on your experience at the longer distances with this gun.

My buddy had me start with 168 gr barnes tsx. This gun will be my main long distance hunting rifle. But i am seeking sub moa at 1000 to 1500 yrds.
Am i asking to much for this gun ? Caliber? or just keep testing ammo?

I rarely ask questions on the web so bare with me...:)
Thanks Pete

Re: Sendero 300 Rum long range shot feedback

I don't shoot a RUM. I shoot a WM, but I can tell you from experience that you'll be a lot happier if you try the Berger/JLK 210's or the Hornady 208's. Will fight the wind a lot better than those 168's past about 800 yds. You might give the new Hornady 225 a try as well. The 300 RUM should make you very happy in the LR department. Just start saving for your next barrel now.

For hunting I would use the 200 gr. Accubond if you want a pure hunting bullet. I also have it on good authority that the 210 Bergers are very effective on game if you want to stick to one bullet for everything.

EDIT: it won't shoot sub-MOA at LR if it doesn't shoot well at shorter distances. How are your fundamentals? Can you hold MOA or better now? The Sendero is a pretty solid platform, usually capable of MOA or better, but may need some massaging like bedding, etc. to really bring out the best.

Re: Sendero 300 Rum long range shot feedback

Why have the extra case capacity just to shoot a 168 grain bullet. A 308 or 30-06 can do that very well with much less powder. Step up to the 200+ grain bullets. The Accubonds fly very well and hit hard. They are more of a traditional hunting bullet.

After working with my sendero as well as a friends, I think they definitely benefit from bedding and a trigger job / replacement. I am not a fan of the X-mark and would recommend replacing it. My friend however likes his tuned X-mark. With good handloads, accuracy shouldn't be your concern.

Re: Sendero 300 Rum long range shot feedback

ok so it sounds like i need to step up the bullet to a little heavier one. I do want to keep it a no lead bullet so ill start looking at barnes.the gun shoots sub moa now and it has hit 1000 yrds with the 180 gr bullet. but moa at a 1000yrds ... hmmmm this is gonna be fun..lol
i am thinking about bedding it asap.. thanks Pete

Re: Sendero 300 Rum long range shot feedback

what load and bullet are you using in yours now?
Have you tried barnes ttsx or tsx? im in california and lead free is kinda being pushed hard.. so i would hate to work up a great load and not be able to shoot it..

Re: Sendero 300 Rum long range shot feedback

as stated above , switching to a bullet that is intended for lr is where you should start . try hornady 208 a max or any of the heavy berger vld bullets . perhaps nosler 200 gr accubonds . 2nd get the triggger tuned and have the stock bedded .
good shooting .

Re: Sendero 300 Rum long range shot feedback

We dont shoot competition with our 300 ultras, but do hunt at long range with them, for deer we use a 150 grain Nosler bullet and we also use a 180 grain Nosler bullet for Elk, we have had great sucess at long range with this calaber, but would recomend bedding the rifle and a after market trigger....
Our son has one that is a custom from GAP that has a custom bbl on it for speed and gets a conographed (on three cono's) 3950 with a 150 and it shoots really flat and with the can on the end it is very plesant to spot long range hits on game for him.

Can you supply anymore details on the Hornady 225 grain bullet? what type of bullet is it? Amax??

I did some google searching and couldn't find anything. Also looked at the Hornady website and could not find it.

Re: Sendero 300 Rum long range shot feedback

I own and shoot 3 300 rums(Rem 700s) and hunt elk, deer and bear with them. Take the above advice and shoot Berger 210s. Bed it and lighten the trigger. H1000 or Retumbo work great. Do not waste your time with anything less than 200gr or you might as well get a 300wm or 30-06. Good luck.

Re: Sendero 300 Rum long range shot feedback

I don't hunt with my rum so I shoot 190 smk's out of it and the accuracy is amazing. However, its not built to hunt with at 19 lbs, its built to gong steel. So far have hit cold bore at 1000 and 3rd shot at 1 mile. In my opinion the caliber is capable of alot so keep tinkering and you will be happy.
